Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,527 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 577 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LPMA Madeira International Airport Cristiano Ronaldo, taking 6 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 05, with a takeoff distance of 1,278 meters, which was 51% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 152 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 18°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 290°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the tailwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started overhead Machico, Madeira, Portugal, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 961 feet above sea level to 33,986 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,025 feet in 29 minutes, covering a distance of 218 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began at a latitude of 35.1582247 and a longitude of -13.6469553, lasting 144 minutes and covering a distance of 1,208 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 1 mile west of Zwevegem, Flanders, Belgium, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 33,991 feet above sea level to 2,026 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,965 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 122 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, this time starting overhead Uitgeest, Provincie Noord-Holland, The Netherlands, and lasting only 2 minutes, covering a distance of 7 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 18R at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol took place from the north, with the aircraft heading 183.0° at an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
However, the aircraft was forced to execute a go-around at an altitude of 171 feet above ground level. The landing eventually took place on runway 18R, with a runway length of 3,527 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 6°C temperature and a wind speed of 8 knots at 101°. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the headwind was 1 knot. The touchdown point was 154 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 134 knots and a touchdown rate of -719 feet per minute, which was considered very heavy.
The runway touchdown alignment was very good, but the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 29.2 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,066 meters, which was 30% of the runway length. The total flight distance was 1,598 nautical miles, taking a total of 216 minutes and using 1,469 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed on runway 18R at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, achieving an overall score of 83.6%. The final approach was conducted from the north, heading 183.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,272 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft's performance during the landing was satisfactory, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 141 knots. The touchdown point was located 154 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly off-center but still within an acceptable range. The touchdown speed of 134 knots was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent.
However, the touchdown rate was quite heavy, at -719 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly aggressive approach. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained a stable and aligned approach path.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 101°. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was only 1 knot. These conditions were favorable for a smooth landing.
The total landing distance of 1,066 meters was 30% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 29.2 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended path during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there are some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown rate and runway rollout alignment.
