Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 791 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in question began with taxiing from a parking position to the runway, a trip that took 5 minutes and covered a distance of approximately 2 nautical miles (nm). This was a brief but necessary step before taking off from runway 36 at EVRA Riga International Airport. The departure roll was smooth, with a takeoff distance of 1,139 meters, which covered about 39% of the available runway. The aircraft lifted off the ground at a liftoff speed of 155 knots (kt).
Local weather conditions at the time of departure were relatively stable, with a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. Although winds were present, blowing at 4 knots from a heading of 70 degrees, this resulted in a crosswind component of 4 knots and a headwind component of 2 knots.
As the aircraft began its enroute climb, it started ascending from an initial altitude of 1,044 feet above sea level (asl) to a maximum cruise altitude of 35,568 ft asl. This climb took 16 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 104 nm. The climb profile saw the aircraft gaining a total of 34,523 ft in altitude, reaching its high point over a point east of Pinki, Latvia.
After leveling off and reaching cruising altitude, the aircraft began its enroute descent over Libatse, Estonia, from an altitude of 35,568 ft asl to 12,384 ft asl. This 16-minute descent covered a distance of 91 nm, with the aircraft losing a total of 23,183 ft in altitude. As the aircraft continued on its route, it entered its final descent phase over Vantaa, Finland, and descended from 12,410 ft asl to a landing altitude of 1,444 ft asl. This 10-minute descent covered a distance of approximately 5 nm.
The final approach began with the aircraft positioning itself for a landing on runway 15 at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport. The aircraft approached from a heading of 153.0 degrees, flying at an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl) and at a distance of 4 nm from the runway threshold. Local weather conditions at the time of landing were slightly cooler, with a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, and lighter winds of 2 knots from a heading of 101 degrees.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the threshold height was slightly above the target height, but the threshold speed was within acceptable limits at 130 kt. However, the touchdown speed of 128 kt was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was hard at -409 fpm. The aircraft also experienced a runway touchdown position that was misaligned by 10.1 meters from the runway centerline.
Following the landing, the aircraft taxied back to a parking position, a journey that took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nm. The total flight distance was 220 nm and took 57 minutes. The aircraft used 2,087 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 landed at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport with a final score of 89.5%. The approach was initiated from the north-west, heading towards runway 15. The aircraft was at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl) when it started its descent. The crew successfully touched down on the runway, with a touchdown speed of 128 kt and a little faster than the target speed.
Although the pilot managed to achieve a reasonable touchdown speed, the rate of descent was quite steep at -409 fpm, which may have been a concern. Furthermore, the touchdown point was located 393 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating some delay in the flare maneuver. It was also noted that the runway touchdown position was slightly off-center, with a misalignment of 10.1 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions during the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 19°C, a gentle wind of 2 kt at 101°, and a negligible crosswind and headwind component. Given the runway length of 2,894 meters, the aircraft was able to roll out and stop on the runway, covering a total distance of 1,437 meters, which is approximately 50% of the available runway length.
Upon completion of the landing rollout, the aircraft was found to be slightly misaligned by 9.0 meters from the centerline, which indicates that the crew may have applied the brakes unevenly. Overall, the landing was satisfactory, but it showed some minor deviations from the ideal approach and touchdown parameters. A score of 89.5% suggests that there is room for improvement in terms of precision and control during the landing phase.
