Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,234 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,234 m of the 3,348 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,121 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 taxied from the parking area to runway 25R at KPHX, a movement that required 12 minutes and covered 2 nm.
The aircraft commenced its departure roll on runway 25R at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, achieving a takeoff distance of 1,676 m, which represented 54 % of the runway. Liftoff occurred at 147 kt and the ambient temperature was 46 °C.
Climb began 1 mile southeast of Central City, Arizona, with the airplane accelerating from 2,047 ft asl to 16,540 ft asl, an altitude gain of 14,493 ft achieved in 5 minutes while covering 25 nm.
Level cruise was established 3 miles north of Maricopa, Arizona, lasting 5 minutes and encompassing 29 nm.
Descent commenced 2 miles west of AZ04 Hillair Dirt Strip Aguila, Arizona, with a reduction from 16,543 ft asl to 3,648 ft asl, a loss of 12,894 ft over 11 minutes and a distance of 49 nm.
The final approach to runway 11L at KTUS Tucson International Airport was flown from the northwest, on a heading of 134.0 ° at 4 nm and 1,056 ft agl.
Landing on runway 11L, which measures 3,348 m, occurred with a threshold speed of 168 kt. Touchdown was recorded 712 m beyond the touchdown zone, at a speed of 141 kt and a vertical rate of minus 155 fpm. The touchdown point was offset 16.4 m from the centreline. Local weather reported a temperature of 36 °C, wind 7 kt from 209 °, providing a 7 kt crosswind and a 2 kt headwind.
The aircraft rolled out over a distance of 2,160 m, representing 65 % of the runway, and the rollout alignment was measured 16.0 m off the centreline.
After landing, the airplane taxied to the parking area in 2 minutes, covering less than 1 nm.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 113nm, required 34 minutes, and consumed 1,255 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 approached runway 11L at KTUS from the north-west on a heading of 134.0° at 4 nm and 1,056 ft AGL. Ambient temperature was 36 °C with wind from 209° at 7 kt, giving a 2 kt headwind and a 7 kt crosswind component.
The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was too high at 168 kt.
Touchdown occurred 712 m beyond the touchdown zone with a speed of 141 kt, noted as a little fast, and a vertical rate of minus 155 fpm, which was good. The touchdown point was significantly misaligned by 16.4 m from the centreline.
The aircraft used a total landing distance of 2,160 m, representing 65 % of the 3,348 m runway, and the rollout alignment was misaligned by 16.0 m from the centreline.
To raise the 80.9 % score, reduce the threshold and touchdown speeds to meet target values and tighten lateral control to keep touchdown and rollout within a few metres of centreline. Maintaining speeds closer to planned values will also help keep the landing distance comfortably within runway limits.
