Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,860 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,860 ft of the 9,971 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,409 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A319 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, taking 4 minutes and covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. Departure roll took place on runway 29, with the aircraft lifting off at a speed of 148 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 57°F and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 297°, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 10-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it passed overhead Bridgeton, Missouri, and continued to ascend to 38,100 feet above sea level, an increase of 36,474 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 111 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase began 3 miles east of Winona, Missouri, and lasted for 52 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 349 nautical miles.
The enroute descent phase started 4 miles north of Hodges Airfield in Many, Louisiana, and involved a descent from 38,177 feet to 3,405 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,772 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 113 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb phase, this time from 3,491 feet to 5,552 feet above sea level, an increase of 2,061 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 13 nautical miles.
The final descent phase started 1 mile southeast of the Flying F Ranch Airport in Crosby, Texas, and involved a descent from 5,597 feet to 1,471 feet above sea level, a decrease of 4,126 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 27 at George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, flying from the east at a heading of 270.0°, 4 nautical miles from the runway and 1,364 feet above ground level.
The landing took place on runway 27, which had a length of 9,971 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 135 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 1,412 feet, but the touchdown speed of 130 knots was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -234 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 81°F and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 20°, resulting in an 8-knot crosswind and a 3-knot tailwind.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 606 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 109 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 8,807 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A319 successfully landed at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 270.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,364 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, and the aircraft landed safely on runway 27, which has a length of 9,971 feet.
The threshold height was good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct altitude as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 135 knots, which may have been due to various factors such as wind resistance or the aircraft's weight. Despite this, the touchdown distance was good at 1,412 feet, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and land smoothly.
The touchdown speed of 130 knots was a little fast, which may have resulted in a slightly higher touchdown rate of -234 feet per minute (fpm). However, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway as it touched down. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 81°F and winds of 8 knots at 20°, also played a role in the landing.
The total landing distance of 5,603 feet was 56% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain control and stability as it rolled out of the runway. Overall, the landing was executed with precision and control, resulting in a high score of 98.9%.
