Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: off the centreline.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,996 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 361 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 29 at LQSA Sarajevo International Airport. The aircraft, a DA42-TDI, took off with a takeoff distance of 164 meters, which was 8% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 78 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were a temperature of 16°C, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 270°, resulting in a 2-knot crosswind and a 4-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it reached an altitude of 8,987 feet above sea level, an increase of 6,616 feet from the initial altitude of 2,371 feet. This climb took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 9 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise phase began 1 mile south east of Mahala, lasting 14 minutes and covering 24 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its descent from 9,009 feet above sea level to 6,033 feet, a decrease of 2,976 feet in 3 minutes, covering 8 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise phase, which started 3 miles north west of Kakanj and lasted 9 minutes, covering 17 nautical miles.
The flight continued with a series of enroute level cruise and descent phases, with the aircraft climbing and descending between various points in the region. These phases included a climb from 4,031 feet to 5,994 feet in 3 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles, and a descent from 5,993 feet to 5,404 feet in 2 minutes, covering 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 11 at LQSA Sarajevo International Airport began from the north west, with the aircraft heading 122.0° at 2 nautical miles and 860 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 358 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 59 knots, and the touchdown rate was -168 feet per minute, both of which were good.
The total landing distance was 590 meters, which was 30% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight distance was 114 nautical miles, and the flight used 33 kilograms of fuel.
The DA42-TDI aircraft successfully landed at LQSA Sarajevo International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The final approach was conducted from the north-west, aligning with the runway 11 at a heading of 122.0°, at a distance of 2 nautical miles and an altitude of 860 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft demonstrated excellent control and precision during the landing, with a good threshold height and speed. The threshold speed was maintained at 73 knots, which is a critical factor in ensuring a safe and controlled touchdown. The touchdown distance of 358 meters was also within the acceptable range, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 59 knots, which is a good indication of a controlled descent. The touchdown rate of -168 feet per minute (fpm) was also within the acceptable range, suggesting that the aircraft was properly configured for landing and that the pilot had maintained good control throughout the approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C. This suggests that the aircraft was not affected by any adverse weather conditions, such as turbulence or strong winds, which could have impacted the landing.
The total landing distance of 590 meters was 30% of the runway length, which is a good indication of the aircraft's performance and the pilot's skills. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway and that the pilot had maintained good control throughout the landing.
Overall, the DA42-TDI aircraft demonstrated excellent performance and control during the landing at LQSA Sarajevo International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.9%. The pilot's skills and the aircraft's performance were well-coordinated, resulting in a safe and controlled landing.
