Track the centreline
Preparing for a stable approach will give you time to decide on whether to attempt the landing or going around. Too much altitude with a high sink rate will result in carrying too much speed onto the runway. Configuring flaps and the gear late also won't help the speed decay.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
At the 1,000 ft gate: centreline 8.6° off, against a 1° limit.
At the 500 ft gate: centreline 1.0° off, against a 1° limit.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,819 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 423 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The TBM 850 taxied to runway 34 at EGPD Aberdeen Dyce Airport and commenced the take-off roll, covering 550 m which represented 28 % of the available runway. Liftoff was achieved at 92 kt while the local weather reported a temperature of 16 °C, wind 2 kt from 270°, a 2 kt cross-wind component and a 1 kt head-wind component.
Climb began approximately one mile north-west of Dyce, with the aircraft ascending from 1,206 ft asl to 7,985 ft asl - a gain of 6,779 ft - over four minutes while traversing eight nautical miles.
The first cruise segment started two miles west of Westhill and lasted two minutes, during which the aircraft covered five nautical miles at level flight.
A second climb was initiated one mile north-east of Banchory, raising the altitude from 7,965 ft asl to 9,865 ft asl, an increase of 1,900 ft in three minutes and covering ten nautical miles.
The subsequent cruise phase began five miles west of Auchenblae, lasting six minutes and encompassing twenty-three nautical miles at a constant altitude.
A further climb commenced two miles south-west of Kirriemuir, lifting the aircraft from 9,637 ft asl to 20,760 ft asl - an ascent of 11,122 ft - over ten minutes while covering thirty nautical miles.
The next cruise segment started overhead Kennoway, persisting for twenty-two minutes and spanning ninety-six nautical miles.
Descent began seven miles south of Kirkcudbright, with the aircraft descending from 20,937 ft asl to 604 ft asl, a loss of 20,334 ft in fifteen minutes while covering forty-three nautical miles.
During the final approach to runway 26 at EGNS Isle of Man Airport, the aircraft descended from 1,392 ft agl to 38 ft agl in 144 seconds and was recorded as having scored on the stabilisation gates.
Landing on runway 26 was executed with a runway length of 1,819 m; the threshold speed was slightly below target at 73 kt. Touchdown occurred 422 m down the runway at 64 kt with a smooth vertical speed of minus 108 fpm, and runway-touchdown alignment was perfect. Local conditions at the time were a temperature of 15 °C, wind 2 kt from 270°, zero cross-wind and a 2 kt head-wind. The total landing distance recorded was 792 m, representing 44 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was assessed as very good, with the aircraft remaining on the centreline throughout the deceleration phase.
Taxi-in to the parking area required two minutes and covered less than one nautical mile.
In total, the flight covered 222 nm, lasted 66 minutes and consumed 185 kg of fuel.
The TBM 850 approached runway 26 at EGNS Isle of Man Airport with an unstable assessment at the 1,000 ft gate, being off the centreline, and completed a descent from 1,392 ft agl to 38 ft agl in 144 seconds while being scored on the stabilisation gates; local weather was 15 °C with wind 2 kt from 270° and no cross-wind component.
During the threshold and flare phase the aircraft achieved a good threshold height, while the threshold speed was a little below target at 73 kt.
Touchdown occurred 422 m down the runway at a speed of 64 kt, with a smooth rate of -108 fpm and perfect runway touchdown alignment; the total landing distance was 792 m, representing 44 % of the 1,819 m runway.
The rollout phase showed very good runway rollout alignment.
To convert the high overall score of 95.1 % into a flawless performance, focus on maintaining centreline alignment through the final 1,000 ft gate to achieve a stabilised approach, and adjust the approach speed to meet the target threshold speed more closely.
