Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,738 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 204 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 727-200, then departed from runway 15L at KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,763 meters, which accounted for 48% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots, and the local weather conditions were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 7 knots at 130 degrees, a crosswind of 3 knots, and a headwind of 7 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it began its enroute climb from 678 feet above sea level to 4,247 feet above sea level, an increase of 3,568 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. The climb started 1 mile south of KIAH George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport. The aircraft then entered a level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 8 nautical miles, starting 4 miles north of Humble, Texas.
The aircraft continued its journey, entering another climb phase from 4,292 feet above sea level to 28,904 feet above sea level, an increase of 24,613 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles. This climb started 2 miles southeast of Roman Forest, Texas. Following this climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase that lasted for 45 minutes, covering 393 nautical miles, starting 5 miles northeast of Orange, Texas.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 29,387 feet above sea level to 6,245 feet above sea level, a decrease of 23,142 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 106 nautical miles. This descent started 7 miles south of KMGM Montgomery Regional (Dannelly Field) Airport in Montgomery, Alabama. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which lasted for 2 minutes and covered 8 nautical miles, starting 2 miles northwest of Newnan, Georgia.
The aircraft continued its descent from 5,314 feet above sea level to 3,173 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,140 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles. This descent started 3 miles west of Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia. Following this descent, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase that lasted for 3 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles, starting 1 mile west of 4GA6 Chattahoochee Air Park in Douglasville, Georgia.
The final approach to runway 09R at KATL Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport was made from the west, heading 90.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,001 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 09R was successful, with a touchdown distance of 201 meters, which was good. However, the touchdown speed of 129 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -618 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, a wind speed of 4 knots at 120 degrees, a crosswind of 2 knots, and a headwind of 4 knots. The total landing distance was 916 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 11 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 625 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 107 minutes.
The Boeing 727-200 aircraft successfully landed at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) on runway 09R. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,001 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency in its approach, achieving a score of 94.8%.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway with a speed of 132 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed. However, the touchdown speed of 129 knots was slightly faster than desired, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing speed. The touchdown distance of 201 meters was also within the acceptable range.
The landing rate of -618 feet per minute (fpm) was considered heavy, suggesting that the aircraft may have touched down with a slightly higher than ideal rate of descent. This could be attributed to factors such as the aircraft's weight, the air density, or the pilot's decision to maintain a steeper rate of descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.4 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft was able to maintain its alignment and direction after touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C and a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 120°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions were favorable for the landing, and the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and touchdown.
Overall, the Boeing 727-200 aircraft demonstrated a high level of proficiency in its landing at KATL, with a score of 94.8%. While there were some minor deviations from the optimal landing parameters, the aircraft was able to maintain a stable approach and touchdown, and the runway rollout alignment was very good.
