Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 10,483 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 421 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 9 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 08R at Vancouver International Airport (CYVR). The takeoff distance was 3,721 feet, which is 35% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 154 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 7 knots at 110°. The crosswind was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind was 7 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the Vancouver International Seaplane Base (CAM9), where the aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,046 feet above sea level to 33,330 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,284 feet in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 20 miles southeast of Princeton, British Columbia, and lasted for 115 minutes, covering a distance of 1,608 nautical miles. The descent started 2 miles south of White Cloud Island (CYOL), where the aircraft descended from 33,183 feet above sea level to 1,774 feet above sea level, a decrease of 31,409 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 88 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 05 at Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport (CYYZ) was made from the southwest, heading 46.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,215 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 124 knots and a touchdown distance of 420 feet, which is 33% of the runway length. The touchdown rate was fair at -259 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 13 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 70°F and a wind speed of 8 knots at 150°, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 3,476 feet, and the runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
In total, the flight distance was 1,819 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 165 minutes. The aircraft used 22,873 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at CYYZ Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.2%. The final approach to runway 05 was conducted from the southwest, with a heading of 46.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,215 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 124 knots. The touchdown distance was within acceptable limits at 420 feet, and the touchdown speed was maintained at 124 knots, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. However, the touchdown rate was slightly below average at -259 feet per minute, which may be a minor area for improvement.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned from the centreline by 13 feet, which may be due to factors such as wind or pilot error. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 70°F and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 150°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 2 knots, which may have contributed to the slight misalignment.
The total landing distance was 3,476 feet, which is approximately 33% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the aircraft was well-controlled and the pilots executed the landing smoothly. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was well-handled by the pilots. However, there may be opportunities for improvement in terms of touchdown rate and runway alignment.
