Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,853 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,853 m of the 3,329 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,047 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from London City Airport, the Airbus A320 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. As the aircraft lined up on runway 09, the local weather conditions were favorable, with a temperature of 16 °C and a gentle tailwind of 2 knots. The takeoff roll commenced, and the aircraft accelerated down the 1,059-meter runway, utilizing 75% of its length before lifting off at a speed of 148 knots. The climb phase started shortly after, as the aircraft ascended from 953 feet above sea level to 22,709 feet, a vertical increase of 21,756 feet, in just 11 minutes and covering a distance of 61 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it entered a level cruise phase, maintaining an altitude of 22,709 feet for 8 minutes while covering an additional 61 nautical miles. The descent phase commenced over Beerst, Flanders, Belgium, where the aircraft began its gradual descent from 22,709 feet to 10,424 feet, a decrease of 12,285 feet, in 7 minutes and covering 47 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time lasting 2 minutes and covering 8 nautical miles, before beginning its final descent phase over Kapelle-op-den-Bos. The aircraft continued to descend, reaching an altitude of 2,470 feet, a decrease of 7,740 feet, in 7 minutes and covering 31 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 25R at Brussels Airport was initiated from the north-east, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 246.0° at an altitude of 1,279 feet above ground level.
The Airbus A320 landed safely on runway 25R, with a touchdown point 630 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 124 knots, and the touchdown rate was firm at -360 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned, but the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total landing distance was 1,771 meters, or 53% of the runway length. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 6 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 230 nautical miles, and the aircraft used 2,216 kilograms of fuel during the journey, which lasted a total of 52 minutes.
The final approach to runway 25R at EBBR Brussels Airport was initiated from the north east, heading 246.0° at 4 nm and 1,279 ft above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a threshold height of 70 ft above ground level, which was well above the target. The threshold speed of 138 kt was within the acceptable range, indicating a good control of the aircraft's descent and speed.
As the aircraft touched down on the runway, the touchdown point was located 630 m beyond the touchdown zone, which is slightly beyond the ideal position. The touchdown speed of 124 kt was good, and the touchdown rate of -360 fpm was firm, indicating a controlled descent. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.8 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 15 °C and a light headwind of 2 kt, did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,771 m was 53% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. The runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating a smooth and controlled deceleration of the aircraft after touchdown. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 84.5%. While there were some minor deviations from the ideal touchdown position and speed, the pilot's control of the aircraft during the approach and landing phases was good, and the landing was completed safely.
