Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,693 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 369 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, taking 7 minutes and covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 04R, with a takeoff distance of 1,550 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 164 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport, it encountered local weather conditions of 14°C temperature and a wind speed of 8 knots at 330 degrees. The crosswind component was 8 knots, while the headwind component was 2 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, with the aircraft ascending from 909 feet above sea level to 35,271 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,362 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 120 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Saint-Joseph-de-Riviere, France, and lasted for 23 minutes, covering a distance of 170 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent overhead Opfikon, Switzerland, descending from 35,354 feet above sea level to 33,347 feet above sea level, a decrease of 2,007 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile west of Reichenau, Germany, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its descent 2 miles southwest of Wald, Germany, descending from 32,684 feet above sea level to 3,087 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,597 feet in 22 minutes, covering a distance of 122 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28 at Nuremberg Airport took place from the east, with the aircraft heading 279.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,363 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 28, which had a length of 2,693 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also good at 134 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 369 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 132 knots, resulting in a hard touchdown rate of -437 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at Nuremberg Airport were 0°C temperature and a wind speed of 2 knots at 90 degrees, with a crosswind component of 0 knots and a tailwind component of 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,223 meters, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also very good.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 463 nautical miles, taking 86 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,400 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at Nuremberg Airport (EDDN) with a score of 97.3%. The final approach to runway 28 was initiated from the east, heading 279.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,363 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a safe altitude prior to touchdown.
Upon landing, the threshold speed was recorded at 134 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 369 meters was also satisfactory, demonstrating the pilots' ability to control the aircraft's descent and maintain a stable approach. However, the touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly higher than the optimal speed, which may have contributed to a harder touchdown rate.
The touchdown rate of -437 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, indicating that the aircraft's descent was more rapid than desired. This may be attributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilots maintained a stable and aligned approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 0°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 90°. The crosswind component was negligible, while the tailwind component was 2 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,223 meters was 45% of the runway length, which is a reasonable distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and the pilots demonstrating good control and management of the aircraft throughout the approach and landing phases.
