Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,815 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 435 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 36 at YPED RAAF Base Edinburgh. The takeoff distance was 1,162 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 157 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots at 289 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, and the headwind was 1 knot. After departing from the base, the aircraft began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile north west of Penfield in the State of South Australia, Australia. The climb took 37 minutes and covered a distance of 302 nautical miles, with the aircraft rising from an altitude of 1,106 feet above sea level to 38,943 feet above sea level.
Following the climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile north east of Ravenswood in the State of Victoria, Australia. This cruise phase lasted for 189 minutes and covered a distance of 1,276 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 28 miles north west of NZWS Westport Airport in Westport, New Zealand. The descent took 25 minutes and covered a distance of 162 nautical miles, with the aircraft decreasing its altitude from 38,570 feet above sea level to 2,018 feet above sea level.
After the descent, the aircraft entered another level cruise, starting 10 miles south of NZWN Wellington International Airport in Wellington, New Zealand. This cruise phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 34 at NZWN Wellington International Airport, approaching from the south at a heading of 3.0 degrees and at an altitude of 1,248 feet above ground level.
The landing was made on runway 34, which had a length of 1,815 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 143 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 438 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 133 knots. The touchdown rate was fair at -213 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 5 knots at 0 degrees, with a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 5 knots.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking, which took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,753 nautical miles, and the total flight time was 221 minutes. The aircraft used 9,590 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at Wellington International Airport, with a final approach score of 99.5%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the south, heading 3.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,248 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft landed on runway 34, which has a length of 1,815 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway threshold. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 142 kt, which is a common occurrence due to various factors such as aircraft weight, air density, and pilot technique. The touchdown distance of 438 meters was considered good, indicating that the aircraft was able to touch down within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold.
The touchdown speed of 133 kt was a little fast, which may have been due to the aircraft's momentum and the pilot's decision to touch down at that speed. The touchdown rate of -213 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down relatively quickly after touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline at the moment of touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 12°C and a wind speed of 5 kt from a direction of 0°. This resulted in a headwind of 5 kt, which may have helped to slow down the aircraft during the approach. The crosswind component was negligible, with a speed of 0 kt.
The total landing distance of 891 meters was 49% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance. This indicates that the aircraft was able to slow down and stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was aligned with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with a high score of 99.5%. The aircraft was able to touch down within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold, and the pilot was able to slow down and stop the aircraft within a short distance.
