Slow down before tight turns
Twenty knots on a monitor produces the visual sensation of about ten. The advice to "taxi at a walking pace" cannot fix this, because your sense of walking pace is exactly the thing that's broken. Put the groundspeed readout in your scan and obey it for the next fifty flights, the way a student pilot leans on the airspeed indicator before learning to read attitude.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 699 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 25R at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX). The takeoff distance was 1,528 meters, which was 45% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 182 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 180 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 0 knots. As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead KLAX. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 117 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,136 feet above sea level to 31,990 feet above sea level, an increase of 30,854 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 2 miles northwest of Richgrove, California. This phase of the flight lasted for 578 minutes and covered a distance of 4,666 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 2 miles northeast of Luvia, Finland. The descent took 18 minutes and covered a distance of 104 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 32,113 feet above sea level to 2,343 feet above sea level, a decrease of 29,770 feet.
After the enroute descent, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile west of Nurmijaervi, Finland. This phase of the flight lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 6 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 15 at Helsinki Vantaa Airport (EFHK), which was located to the northwest of the aircraft's position. The approach was made from a heading of 153.0 degrees at an altitude of 1,264 feet above ground level and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold.
The landing was made on runway 15, which had a length of 2,894 meters. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1 degree Celsius and a wind speed of 8 knots from a direction of 150 degrees. The crosswind component was 0 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. The touchdown point was 284 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 139 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was also good at -173 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The total landing distance was 1,354 meters, which was 47% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 4,903 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 627 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 85,230 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at EFHK Helsinki Vantaa Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its approach and landing procedures. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north-west, heading 153.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,264 feet above ground level (agl).
The pilot's final approach to runway 15 was executed with precision, achieving a good threshold height and speed. The threshold speed of 148 knots was well within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown point was 284 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance considering the runway length of 2,894 meters.
The landing speed of 139 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -173 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled and gentle touchdown. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to align the aircraft with the runway centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were moderate, with a temperature of -1°C and a wind speed of 8 knots from 150°. The crosswind component was negligible, but the headwind component of 7 knots was present. Despite these conditions, the pilot was able to maintain a stable approach and landing, with the total landing distance of 1,354 meters being only 47% of the runway length.
The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and bring it to a stop safely. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, demonstrating the pilot's expertise and the aircraft's capabilities.
