MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 5,147 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,147 ft of the 12,187 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 234 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 03R at LTAC Esenboğa International Airport in Ankara, Turkey. The takeoff distance was 3,438 feet, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 141 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of the airport, it encountered local weather conditions of a temperature of 64°F and winds of 9 knots at 40°. The crosswind was 1 knot, while the headwind was 9 knots. The enroute climb started overhead the airport, where the aircraft climbed from 4,130 feet above sea level to 11,109 feet, an increase of 6,978 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 3 miles northwest of Cubuk, Ankara, and lasting 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. However, this was short-lived, as the aircraft began another climb 9 miles northwest of Cubuk, rising from 11,973 feet to 25,953 feet, an increase of 13,980 feet in 7 minutes, covering 34 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 13 miles northeast of Kibriscik, Bolu, and lasting 11 minutes, covering 74 nautical miles. However, this was followed by a descent, which started 3 miles southeast of Sogutlu, Sakarya, and lasted 23 minutes, covering 86 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from 25,903 feet to 339 feet, a decrease of 25,564 feet.
The aircraft then began another climb, starting 2 miles west of LTFM İstanbul Airport Arnavutköy, Istanbul, and rising from 339 feet to 2,953 feet, an increase of 2,615 feet in 3 minutes, covering 9 nautical miles. This was followed by another level cruise, starting 9 miles north of LTTC Trial Çatalca Tunnels Catalca, Istanbul, and lasting 10 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles.
However, this was followed by another descent, which started 11 miles north of LTFM İstanbul Airport Arnavutköy and lasted 2 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles. The aircraft descended from 2,955 feet to 1,475 feet, a decrease of 1,480 feet.
The final approach to runway 16R at LTFM İstanbul Airport was from the north, heading 178.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,250 feet above ground level. The landing on the runway was successful, with a touchdown distance of 227 feet and a touchdown speed of 128 knots, which was a little fast. The touchdown rate was fair at -247 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were a temperature of 54°F and winds of 6 knots at 160°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 6 knots. The total landing distance was 4,867 feet, which accounted for 40% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 6 minutes and covered 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 245 nautical miles, taking 74 minutes, and the aircraft used 7,460 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LTFM İstanbul Airport, demonstrating a high level of proficiency in its final approach and landing maneuvers. The aircraft was approaching runway 16R from the north, heading 178.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,250 feet above ground level (agl).
The pilot's performance during the final approach was impressive, with a score of 99.7%. The aircraft maintained a good threshold height, and the threshold speed of 129 knots was within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 227 feet was also satisfactory, indicating that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's descent and speed.
However, there was a slight deviation in the touchdown speed, which was recorded at 128 knots, slightly above the recommended speed. This resulted in a touchdown rate of -247 feet per minute (fpm), which was considered fair. Despite this, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control and stability during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 54°F and a wind speed of 6 knots at 160°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the landing.
The total landing distance of 4,867 feet was within the acceptable range, accounting for approximately 40% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot had effectively managed the aircraft's deceleration and maintained control during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was a success, with the pilot demonstrating a high level of skill and proficiency in managing the aircraft's descent, speed, and alignment during the final approach and landing phases.
