Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,876 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,876 m of the 3,096 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,300 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A32NX, then departed from runway 23 at FQMA Maputo Airport in Mozambique. The takeoff distance was 1,346 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 150 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 30 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 24 knots at 160 degrees.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead FQMA Maputo Airport. The climb took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 60 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,158 feet above sea level to 28,266 feet above sea level, an increase of 27,107 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 18 miles south of FQXI Xai-Xai Airport, and it lasted for 107 minutes, covering a distance of 808 nautical miles.
The enroute descent started 12 miles southwest of Soavinandriana in Madagascar, and it took 14 minutes to descend from an altitude of 28,360 feet above sea level to 5,919 feet above sea level, a decrease of 22,441 feet. The descent covered a distance of 63 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 29 at FMMI Ivato Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 281.0 degrees at 2 nautical miles and 1,741 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 29 at FMMI Ivato Airport was successful, with the touchdown point being 853 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 120 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was perfect at -26 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, and the runway rollout alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots at 140 degrees.
The total landing distance was 1,764 meters, which accounted for 57% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 941 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 151 minutes. The aircraft used 5,780 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A32NX aircraft successfully landed at FMMI Ivato Airport, with a score of 66.7%. The final approach to runway 29 was initiated from the east, heading 281.0° at 2 nautical miles and 1,741 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a slightly above-target threshold speed of 144 knots, which is a relatively high speed but still within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed 853 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant distance. However, the touchdown speed of 120 knots was good, indicating that the pilot maintained control and managed the descent effectively. The touchdown rate of -26 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, suggesting that the aircraft touched down smoothly and without any excessive deceleration.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and wind speeds of 10 knots at 140°. The crosswind component was 6 knots, while the tailwind component was 7 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing, as the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance of 1,764 meters was 57% of the runway length, which is a relatively long distance. However, the runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control and managed the deceleration effectively after touchdown. Overall, while there were some minor issues with the landing, the pilot's performance was satisfactory, and the aircraft landed safely.
