Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with six checks at 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,031 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,031 m of the 3,588 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 984 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 777F taxied from the parking area to runway 19L at VTBS Suvarnabhumi Airport in 7 minutes, covering less than 1 nm of ground distance.
During the departure roll on runway 19L, the aircraft used a takeoff distance of 1,399 m, representing 34 % of the runway, and achieved liftoff at 174 kt; ambient temperature was 30 °C with a wind of 2 kt from 200°, a headwind component of 1 kt and no cross-wind.
Climb commenced 1 mile south of VTBS, where the airplane rose from 956 ft asl to 34,876 ft asl, an altitude gain of 33,920 ft in 15 minutes while covering 104 nm.
The first cruise segment began 3 miles south of Khon Buri, lasted 96 minutes and spanned 729 nm at level flight.
Descent phase one started 51 miles south-east of Yangjiang, with the aircraft descending from 34,998 ft asl to 6,102 ft asl, a loss of 28,896 ft in 18 minutes while traversing 116 nm.
A brief cruise segment was initiated 2 miles south of Hong Kong, lasting 3 minutes and covering 15 nm before the next descent.
Descent phase two began 3 miles north-west of Sai Kung, during which the airplane dropped from 5,679 ft asl to 954 ft asl, a reduction of 4,725 ft in 5 minutes over a distance of 14 nm.
The final approach to runway 25R at VHHH Hong Kong International Airport was flown from the east on a heading of 251.0° at 4 nm and 898 ft agl.
Landing on runway 25R, which is 3,967 m long, occurred with a threshold height of 73 ft agl and a threshold speed of 150 kt; touchdown was recorded 928 m beyond the touchdown zone at 144 kt, with a vertical speed of minus 188 fpm and a lateral offset of 4.0 m from the centreline. Local conditions were 30 °C, wind 4 kt from 229°, cross-wind 1 kt and head-wind 3 kt. The total landing distance was 2,311 m, representing 58 % of the runway.
Runway rollout alignment was reported as very good, confirming the aircraft remained on the centreline throughout the deceleration phase.
The aircraft taxied from the runway to the parking area in 10 minutes, covering 3 nm of taxiway.
In total, the flight covered 987 nm, required 144 minutes of elapsed time and consumed 17,493 kg of fuel.
The Boeing 777F commenced its final approach to runway 25R at VHHH from the east, tracking a heading of 251.0° at 4 nm and 898 ft agl. The approach was assessed as unstable at the 1,000 ft gate: off the glideslope. Ambient temperature was 30 °C with wind 4 kt from 229°, giving a 1 kt crosswind component and a 3 kt headwind.
At the threshold the aircraft encountered a height of 73 ft agl, which was well above the target, and the indicated threshold speed was slightly above target at 150 kt.
Touchdown occurred 928 m beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a speed of 144 kt that was judged good and a vertical rate of minus 188 fpm also rated good. The touchdown point was slightly misaligned by 4.0 m from the centreline.
The aircraft rolled out over a total landing distance of 2,311 m, representing 58 % of the 3,967 m runway, and runway rollout alignment was very good. The overall landing score was 85.3%.
Future flights should concentrate on achieving a stabilized approach within glideslope limits to avoid overshooting the touchdown zone. Adjusting speed and flare timing to bring the touchdown point nearer the intended zone will improve alignment and reduce runway usage.
