Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,541 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 989 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the RJ100 aircraft taxiing from the parking area to the runway at PADQ Kodiak Airport, a process that took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. Departure roll from runway 11 was initiated, and the aircraft took off with a takeoff distance of 41 meters, which was 3% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 118 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 26 knots at 99 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a headwind of 23 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile southeast of PADQ Kodiak Airport, and climbed from an altitude of 1,040 feet above sea level to 13,820 feet above sea level, an increase of 12,780 feet, in 10 minutes and covering a distance of 45 nautical miles.
As the aircraft continued its journey, it began its enroute descent 22 miles west of KPR Port Williams Seaplane Base, and descended from 13,841 feet above sea level to 13,356 feet above sea level, a decrease of 485 feet, in 2 minutes and covering a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, starting 28 miles west of KPR Port Williams Seaplane Base, and lasted for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute descent 6 miles northwest of PFKK Kokhanok Airport, and descended from 13,308 feet above sea level to 3,032 feet above sea level, a decrease of 10,276 feet, in 7 minutes and covering a distance of 19 nautical miles. Following this descent, the aircraft entered another level cruise, starting 13 miles west of PAIL Iliamna Airport, and lasted for 6 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at PAIL Iliamna Airport was initiated from the west, with a heading of 105.0 degrees at 3 nautical miles and 1,851 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 08, which had a length of 1,541 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 128 knots.
The touchdown point was very long, using more than 50% of the available runway. The touchdown speed was 109 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was very hard at -574 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were the same as at the time of takeoff, with a temperature of 6 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 26 knots at 99 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 25 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,405 meters, which was 91% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect. The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 1 minute and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 166 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 48 minutes. The aircraft used 1,340 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The RJ100 aircraft successfully landed at PAIL Iliamna Airport, achieving a score of 78.0%. The final approach was conducted from the west, heading 105.0° at a distance of 3 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,851 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on runway 08, which has a length of 1,541 meters.
The threshold height was reported as good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 128 knots. This indicates that the pilot may have been able to make some adjustments to the approach to achieve a more optimal touchdown speed. The touchdown point was located very far down the runway, using more than 50% of the available runway. This suggests that the pilot may have been able to extend the landing distance, but could have potentially used more of the runway to slow down.
The touchdown speed of 109 knots was reported as good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the landing. However, the touchdown rate was very hard at -574 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate that the pilot could have used a more gradual descent to reduce the impact on the aircraft. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain a stable approach and align the aircraft with the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were reported as follows: a temperature of 6°C, wind at 26 knots from 99°, with a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 25 knots. These conditions would have presented a challenge for the pilot, but the aircraft was able to successfully land.
The total landing distance was 1,405 meters, which is 91% of the available runway. This indicates that the pilot was able to use a significant portion of the runway to slow down the aircraft. The runway rollout alignment was reported as perfect, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft during the rollout and bring it to a stop safely. Overall, the landing was successful, but there are some areas for improvement, particularly in terms of touchdown rate and landing distance.
