Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,537 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,571 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing 737-MAX8 taxied from the parking area to runway 17L at CYYC Calgary International Airport, a movement that lasted 14 minutes and covered 3 nm.
During the departure roll on runway 17L, the aircraft accelerated to a liftoff speed of 163 kt, using a takeoff distance of 7,199 ft (51 % of the runway). Ambient conditions were 81 °F with a wind of 11 kt from 149°, providing a 6 kt crosswind component and a 10 kt headwind.
Climb commenced one mile south-east of CYYC, with the airplane ascending from 4,563 ft asl to 38,003 ft asl, an increase of 33,440 ft achieved in 26 minutes while covering 165 nm.
The first cruise segment began nine miles north-east of 57S Troy, Montana, and persisted for 89 minutes, during which the aircraft travelled 639 nm at level altitude.
Descent started six miles south-west of 4CL3 Antelope Valley Ranch Airport, California, with a reduction from 37,993 ft asl to 7,011 ft asl, a decrease of 30,983 ft accomplished in 17 minutes over 101 nm.
A second cruise phase was initiated four miles south-west of San Lorenzo, California, lasting 12 minutes and covering 35 nm.
The subsequent descent began three miles north-east of Milpitas, California, dropping from 6,987 ft asl to 1,249 ft asl, a loss of 5,738 ft in 7 minutes while traversing 21 nm.
Final approach to runway 28R at KSFO San Francisco International Airport was conducted from the south-east, on a heading of 298.0° at 4 nm and 1,227 ft agl, with local weather reporting a temperature of 72 °F, wind 6 kt from 211°, a 6 kt crosswind and no headwind.
Landing on runway 28R, which measures 11,537 ft, was completed with a threshold speed of 147 kt. Touchdown occurred 208 ft beyond the touchdown zone at a speed of 136 kt; the touchdown rate was hard at minus 417 fpm, and runway alignment was perfect. Total landing distance was 4,620 ft (40 % of the runway), and rollout alignment was slightly off centreline by 39 ft.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a taxi-in that required 19 minutes and covered less than 1 nm.
In total, the flight covered 971 nm, required 165 minutes of airborne time, and used -3,268 lb of fuel.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 established a final approach to runway 28R at KSFO from the southeast, tracking a heading of 298.0° at 4 nm and 1,227 ft above ground level. Local conditions were 72 °F with a wind of 6 kt from 211°, providing a 6 kt crosswind and no headwind.
At threshold the aircraft maintained a good height and a good threshold speed of 147 kt during the flare.
Touchdown occurred 208 ft beyond the designated touchdown zone with a good speed of 136 kt; the vertical rate was hard at minus 417 fpm, while runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The aircraft rolled out over a total landing distance of 4,620 ft, representing 40 % of the 11,537 ft runway, and the rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 39 ft from the centreline.
To refine the already strong performance, smoothing the touchdown to reduce the hard vertical rate and correcting the slight rollout drift will further improve precision.
