Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,033 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 380 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 26R at EDDM Munich Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,222 meters, which accounted for 31% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 144 knots.
As the aircraft took off, it encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 20°C and winds of 7 knots at 160°. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the tailwind was 2 knots. After departing from Munich, the enroute climb started 1 mile west of the airport, with the aircraft climbing from 2,513 feet above sea level to 35,815 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,302 feet in 20 minutes and covering 131 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began overhead Heustreu, a town in Bavaria, Germany, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering 52 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 2 miles south of Hessisch Lichtenau, a town in Hessen, Germany, and involved a descent from 35,420 feet above sea level to 1,302 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,118 feet in 23 minutes and covering 118 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 27 at EDDW Bremen Airport was made from the east, with the aircraft heading 268.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,274 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 27 was successful, with the touchdown distance being good at 383 meters. However, the touchdown speed was fast at 148 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -259 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centreline.
The local weather conditions at Bremen Airport were characterized by a temperature of 18°C and winds of 16 knots at 240°. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the headwind was 14 knots. The total landing distance was 1,310 meters, which accounted for 64% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. After landing, the aircraft taxiing to the parking from the runway took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 309 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 60 minutes. The aircraft used 2,703 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDW Bremen Airport, achieving a score of 96.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the east, heading 268.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,274 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was made to runway 27, which has a length of 2,033 meters.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down with a speed of 156 knots, significantly above the target threshold speed. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control over the aircraft's descent and was able to maintain a safe speed during the landing. The touchdown distance of 383 meters was also within acceptable limits, demonstrating good control over the aircraft's rate of descent.
However, the touchdown speed of 148 knots was slightly faster than desired, resulting in a fair touchdown rate of -259 feet per minute (fpm). This may indicate that the pilot could have applied more gentle control over the aircraft's descent to achieve a smoother touchdown.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 3.1 meters from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's heading or a miscalculation of the approach path. Despite this, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot was able to maintain control over the aircraft's direction during the rollout phase.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 18°C, with a wind speed of 16 knots from 240°. This resulted in a crosswind of 8 knots and a headwind of 14 knots, which may have affected the aircraft's approach and landing. However, the pilot was able to successfully navigate these conditions and achieve a safe landing.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to rest within 64% of the runway length. The pilot's skills and experience were evident in the smooth rollout and good control over the aircraft's direction during the landing phase.
