Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 3,102 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 3,102 m of the 3,731 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,426 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 10 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 05R at RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The takeoff distance was 248 meters, which accounted for 7% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 170 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots at 179 degrees. The crosswind was 8 knots, while the tailwind was 7 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile east of RCTP Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The climb took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 64 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,123 feet above sea level to 33,139 feet above sea level, an increase of 32,016 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 20 miles northwest of RCMQ Taichung International Airport. This phase lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 239 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 45 miles southeast of Jiazi, China. The descent took 24 minutes and covered a distance of 140 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 33,228 feet above sea level to 4,647 feet above sea level, a decrease of 28,581 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 2 miles north of Yung Shue Wan, Hong Kong. This phase lasted for 6 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 2 miles northwest of Sha Tin, Hong Kong. The descent took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 4,665 feet above sea level to 1,360 feet above sea level, a decrease of 3,305 feet.
The final approach to runway 25R at VHHH Hong Kong International Airport was made from the east, with a heading of 251.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,319 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 25R, which had a length of 3,731 meters. The threshold height at 132 feet above ground level was excessively over target, but the threshold speed was good at 147 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,004 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 151 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was excellent at -58 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was very good. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 11 knots at 179 degrees. The crosswind was 10 knots, while the headwind was 4 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,016 meters, which accounted for 81% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.8 meters from the centerline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 476 nautical miles, and the flight took 96 minutes. The aircraft used 13,383 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at Hong Kong International Airport (VHHH) on runway 25R. The final approach was initiated from the east, heading 251.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,319 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft maintained a good threshold speed of 147 knots, which is within the acceptable range for a safe landing.
However, the threshold height at 132 feet agl was found to be excessively over the target, indicating that the aircraft may have descended slightly too quickly during the final approach. Despite this, the touchdown point was 1,004 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively safe distance considering the runway length of 3,731 meters.
The touchdown speed of 151 knots was slightly faster than the recommended speed, but the touchdown rate of -58 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline during the landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 26°C and a wind speed of 11 knots from 179°. The crosswind component was 10 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. These conditions did not appear to have a significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 3,016 meters was 81% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 13.8 meters from the centerline, indicating that the aircraft may have drifted slightly off course during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft touching down safely and rolling out to a stop without incident. However, there were some minor issues with the threshold height and touchdown speed, which may be addressed in future training exercises to improve the crew's performance.
