Keep the approach speed on target
Every knot above Vref is stored kinetic energy, and energy stored at the threshold must be dissipated in ground effect before the aeroplane will stop flying. Because kinetic energy scales with the square of speed, the excess you must dissipate grows fast. At a 45-knot approach, five knots hot is over a tenth more speed and roughly a quarter more energy to get rid of in ground effect. This is why the fix is never in the flare. It was decided three miles earlier, on final, at the airspeed indicator.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,492 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,164 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight in the Piper PA-24-250 Comanche began with a departure roll on runway 17 at RJCK Kushiro Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,192 ft, which was 15% of the total runway length. The liftoff speed was 70 knots, with the local weather at the time indicating a temperature of 54 °F and wind at 8 knots coming from 330 °, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 8 knots.
The enroute climb commenced overhead RJCK Kushiro Airport, ascending from 600 ft above sea level to 5,185 ft over a period of 4 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nm. The climb involved an increase in altitude of 4,586 ft. The subsequent level cruise phase began 4 miles west of the departure airport and lasted for 10 minutes, covering a distance of 8 nm.
After the level cruise, the descent phase started 12 miles west of RJCK Kushiro Airport, with a decrease in altitude from 4,647 ft to 2,570 ft over 2 minutes, covering 6 nm. The descent involved a total loss of 2,078 ft in altitude.
The landing took place on runway 35 at RJCB Tokachi-Obihiro Airport, with a runway length of 8,175 ft. The aircraft was at a height of 90 ft above ground level at the threshold, with a speed of 108 knots. The touchdown occurred 2,583 ft from the threshold at a speed of 59 knots, with a vertical speed indicator reading of -95 ft/min. The local weather at the destination indicated a temperature of 58 °F and a wind speed of 16 knots coming from 340 °, resulting in a headwind of 16 knots.
The total landing distance was 3,168 ft, which was 39% of the runway length. The total flight distance covered was 50 nm, with a total flight time of 602 minutes and fuel consumption of 46 lbs.
