Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 4,001 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 473 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 27 at East Midlands Airport (EGNX). The takeoff distance was 1,196 meters, which accounted for 46% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 148 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 17°C temperature and a wind speed of 8 knots at 210 degrees. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the headwind was 4 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile southwest of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England, and involved a significant ascent from 1,324 feet above sea level to 37,193 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,869 feet in 34 minutes, covering a distance of 244 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles northwest of Eemdijk, Provincie Utrecht, The Netherlands. This phase lasted for 238 minutes and covered a distance of 1,830 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 6 miles east of Mingacevir City, Azerbaijan, and involved a descent from 36,372 feet above sea level to 1,298 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,074 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 130 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 16 at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (UBBB) was made from the north, heading 166.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,285 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 16 was successful, with a total landing distance of 963 meters, which accounted for 24% of the runway. The touchdown point was 54 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was slightly above the target at 138 knots. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 128 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -260 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 27°C temperature and a wind speed of 5 knots at 150 degrees, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 5 knots. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,211 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 302 minutes. The aircraft used 12,601 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at UBBB Heydar Aliyev International Airport, achieving a high score of 99.6%. The final approach to runway 16 was conducted from the north, with a heading of 166.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,285 feet above ground level.
The aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 138 knots. The touchdown point was located 54 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown speed of 128 knots was a bit faster than ideal, but the touchdown rate of -260 feet per minute was considered fair.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 27°C and a gentle wind of 5 knots from a direction of 150°. This resulted in a minimal crosswind component of 1 knot and a significant headwind component of 5 knots. The runway length of 4,001 meters was more than sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance.
The total landing distance of 963 meters was only 24% of the available runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, with the aircraft maintaining a straight path along the runway. Overall, the landing was considered successful, with the aircraft demonstrating good control and stability throughout the approach and touchdown phases.
