Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,986 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 386 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 27 at East Midlands Airport (EGNX). The takeoff distance was 932 meters, which accounted for 36% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 147 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 16°C temperature and a wind speed of 13 knots at 254 degrees. The crosswind was 3 knots, while the headwind was 12 knots. The enroute climb started approximately 1 mile south west of Castle Donington, Leicestershire, England, and involved a significant ascent from 1,336 feet above sea level to 39,041 feet above sea level, an increase of 37,705 feet in 41 minutes, covering a distance of 307 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which began 2 miles south east of Tenneville, Wallonia, Belgium. This phase lasted for 209 minutes and covered a distance of 1,071 nautical miles. The enroute descent started 6 miles north east of Cerkezkoey, Tekirdag, Turkey, and involved a descent from 38,834 feet above sea level to 1,823 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,011 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 66 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 24R at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (LTFJ) was made from the north east, heading 244.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,492 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 24R, which had a length of 2,986 meters, was successful, with a threshold height that was good and a threshold speed that was slightly above the target at 140 knots.
The touchdown distance was good at 389 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 132 knots. The touchdown rate was smooth at -148 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 23°C temperature and a wind speed of 5 knots at 249 degrees, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 5 knots.
The total landing distance was 899 meters, which accounted for 30% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing to the parking from the runway took only 1 minute, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 1,451 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 195 minutes. The aircraft used 8,025 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, specifically on runway 24R. The final approach was executed from the north east, with a heading of 244.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,492 feet above ground level. The aircraft demonstrated a high level of precision, achieving a score of 99.9% for the landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was slightly above the target threshold speed of 140 knots, registering at 140 kt. However, the touchdown distance of 389 meters was considered good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The touchdown speed of 132 kt was a little fast, but the aircraft's rate of descent was smooth at -148 feet per minute, suggesting a well-executed landing.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 23°C and a gentle headwind of 5 knots at 249°. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 kt, which contributed to the aircraft's stable and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline.
The total landing distance of 899 meters was 30% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. This suggests that the pilots executed a precise and controlled approach, taking into account the aircraft's performance characteristics and the runway's length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the aircraft maintained its alignment with the runway centerline during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision and control, demonstrating the pilots' expertise and the aircraft's capabilities. The successful landing was a testament to the effective collaboration between the pilots, air traffic control, and the aircraft's systems.
