MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,365 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,365 m of the 3,527 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,250 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 10 at Princess Juliana International Airport (TNCM) in Saint Martin. The takeoff distance was 1,025 meters, which is 45% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 163 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 29 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots at 60 degrees. The crosswind component was 2 knots, while the headwind component was 4 knots. The aircraft climbed to a height of 35,052 feet above sea level (asl) in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 125 nautical miles.
The enroute climb started over the TNCM Princess Juliana International Airport, and the aircraft climbed from 1,050 feet asl to 35,052 feet asl, an increase of 34,003 feet in 20 minutes. The enroute level cruise started 117 miles northeast of The Valley in Anguilla and lasted 246 minutes, covering a distance of 2,253 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time from 35,053 feet asl to 37,024 feet asl, an increase of 1,971 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 19 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started at a new location, Latitude: 47.1105001, Longitude: -29.5578672, and lasted 144 minutes, covering a distance of 1,230 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent from 36,167 feet asl to 2,117 feet asl, a decrease of 34,049 feet in 18 minutes, covering a distance of 126 nautical miles. The enroute level cruise started over Uitgeest in the Netherlands and lasted 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18R at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (EHAM) was made from the north, heading 183.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,262 feet above ground level (agl). The landing was made on runway 18R, which has a length of 3,527 meters. The threshold height at 88 feet agl was significantly above the target, but the threshold speed was good at 146 knots.
The touchdown point was 798 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 145 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -476 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 9 knots at 220 degrees. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,248 meters, which is 64% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 11 minutes and covered 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 3,768 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 450 minutes. The aircraft used 54,276 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, achieving an overall score of 82.5%. The final approach to runway 18R was initiated from the north, with the aircraft heading 183.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,262 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the touchdown point located 798 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. The touchdown speed of 145 knots was within the acceptable range, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. However, the touchdown rate of -476 feet per minute (fpm) was considered hard, suggesting that the aircraft may have experienced a slight bounce or jolt upon touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 220°. The crosswind component was 5 knots, while the headwind component was 7 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing, as the runway touchdown alignment was reported to be perfect.
The total landing distance of 2,248 meters was 64% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also very good, indicating that the aircraft maintained a stable and controlled path after touchdown.
Overall, while the landing was not perfect, with a hard touchdown rate and a touchdown point beyond the designated zone, the aircraft's performance was still satisfactory, and the crew's skills and experience likely played a significant role in ensuring a safe and successful landing.
