Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,984 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 908 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX), taking approximately 9 minutes to cover a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll took place on runway 24L, with a takeoff distance of 6,303 feet, which is 66% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 168 knots.
As the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude, it encountered local weather conditions of 58°F temperature and a wind speed of 0 knots at 180°. The enroute climb started 2 miles south of Marina del Rey, California, and took the aircraft from an altitude of 1,025 feet above sea level to 35,004 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,979 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 155 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 6 miles north of L64 Desert Center, California, and lasted for 155 minutes, covering a distance of 1,360 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its descent 5 miles southwest of Tuscumbia, Alabama, and descended from 35,100 feet above sea level to 33,127 feet above sea level, a decrease of 1,973 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 30 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 3 miles south of Hillsboro, Alabama, and lasted for 3 minutes, covering a distance of 27 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 2 miles southeast of 4AL8 Milton Airport, Huntsville, Alabama, and descended from 33,145 feet above sea level to 2,323 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,821 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 116 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 09R at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) was made from the west, heading 90.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,278 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 09R, which is 8,984 feet long, with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 146 knots. The touchdown point was 556 feet beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was a little fast at 143 knots, with a hard touchdown rate of -450 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 62°F temperature and a wind speed of 3 knots at 120°, with a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 5,454 feet, which is 61% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing to the parking area from the runway took approximately 4 minutes to cover a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 1,697 nautical miles, taking 217 minutes, and the aircraft used 20,709 pounds of fuel.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (KATL) on runway 09R, achieving a score of 95.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,278 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with a good threshold height, indicating that the aircraft was properly configured for landing.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 146 knots, which may have contributed to a slightly faster touchdown speed of 143 knots. The touchdown point was 556 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. The touchdown rate was also hard at -450 feet per minute (fpm), which may indicate a slightly aggressive descent.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 16 feet from the centerline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the aircraft's brakes were properly applied and the aircraft was able to maintain a stable alignment during the rollout.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 62°F and a wind speed of 3 knots from 120°. The crosswind component was minimal at 2 knots, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly faster touchdown speed.
Overall, the landing was successful, but there were some minor deviations from the ideal performance. The aircraft's score of 95.8% indicates a high level of proficiency, but there is still room for improvement in terms of touchdown speed and alignment.
