Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,756 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,756 m of the 3,707 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 638 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at LIRN Naples International Airport, a process that took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 24, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 1,266 meters, which accounted for 62% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 16°C temperature and winds of 8 knots at 199 degrees. The crosswind was 5 knots, while the headwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb began overhead Vicaria, Campania, Italy, where the aircraft ascended from 1,260 feet above sea level to 35,631 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,370 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 122 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 18 miles northeast of LIVY Campo di Volo Vasto Vasto, Abruzzo, Italy, and lasted for 51 minutes, covering a distance of 375 nautical miles. The descent began 1 mile north of Reichenthal, Oberoesterreich, Austria, where the aircraft descended from 36,001 feet above sea level to 2,574 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,427 feet in 23 minutes, covering a distance of 126 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 06 at LKPR Václav Havel Airport Prague was made from the southwest, heading 65.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,375 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 06, which had a length of 3,707 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 135 knots. The touchdown point was 219 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 124 knots, which was good. However, the touchdown rate was fair at -245 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.3 meters from the centerline, and the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 7.8 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were -1°C temperature and winds of 10 knots at 90 degrees, with a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 9 knots. The total landing distance was 1,673 meters, accounting for 45% of the runway.
The flight concluded with the aircraft taxiing to the parking area from the runway, a process that took 9 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 635 nautical miles, taking a total of 113 minutes, and the aircraft used 4,369 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at LKPR Václav Havel Airport Prague, achieving a score of 95.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 65.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,375 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, touching down on runway 06, which has a length of 3,707 meters.
The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was maintained at 135 knots, indicating a well-executed landing. However, the touchdown point was slightly beyond the designated touchdown zone, located 219 meters down the runway. The touchdown speed of 124 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate of -245 feet per minute (fpm) was only fair, suggesting a slightly longer-than-ideal descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1°C and a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 90°. The crosswind component was minimal at 4 knots, while the headwind component was 9 knots. These conditions did not appear to significantly impact the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,673 meters was 45% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing roll. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.8 meters from the centerline, suggesting a minor deviation from the ideal path. Overall, the landing was executed with a high degree of precision, and the pilot's skills were evident in the successful completion of the maneuver.
