MY FS FLIGHTS
Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,732 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 234 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 20 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 26 at Exeter International Airport (EGTE). The takeoff distance was 421 meters, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 110 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 300 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead Clyst Honiton in Devon, England. The climb took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 108 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,085 feet above sea level to 45,445 feet above sea level, an increase of 44,360 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile south west of Kirdford in West Sussex, England. This cruise phase lasted for 42 minutes and covered a distance of 390 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead Sankt Blasien in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. The descent took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 47 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 45,665 feet above sea level to 33,663 feet above sea level, a decrease of 12,001 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting overhead Steinerberg in Kanton Schwyz, Switzerland. This cruise phase lasted for only 2 minutes and covered a distance of 10 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent, starting 2 miles south east of Muotathal in Kanton Schwyz, Switzerland. The descent took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 51 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 33,706 feet above sea level to 7,480 feet above sea level, a decrease of 26,227 feet.
The final approach to runway 03 at Samedan Airport (LSZS) was made from the south west, with a heading of 38.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,880 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 03, which had a length of 1,732 meters. The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 99 knots. The touchdown distance was good at 200 meters, but the touchdown speed was a little fast at 91 knots. The touchdown rate was hard at -407 feet per minute.
The runway touchdown position was excessively misaligned by 96.1 meters from the centreline, and the runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 94.6 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 10 knots from a direction of 359 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 5 knots and a headwind of 9 knots.
The total landing distance was 579 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 614 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 71 minutes. The aircraft used 852 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation aircraft successfully landed at LSZS Samedan Airport, but the landing was not without its issues. The final approach was conducted from the southwest, heading 38.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,880 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down on runway 03, which has a length of 1,732 meters.
The threshold height was good, but the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 99 knots. This may indicate that the pilot may have been slightly aggressive in their approach. The touchdown distance was good at 200 meters, but the touchdown speed of 91 knots was a little fast. This could have contributed to the hard touchdown rate of -407 feet per minute.
One of the major issues with this landing was the runway touchdown position, which was excessively misaligned by 96.1 meters from the centerline. This suggests that the pilot may have had difficulty aligning the aircraft with the runway during the approach. The local weather conditions were not particularly challenging, with a temperature of 11°C and a wind of 10 knots at 359°.
The crosswind was relatively light at 5 knots, and the headwind was 9 knots, which may have helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach. However, the misaligned touchdown position may have been exacerbated by the wind conditions. The total landing distance was 579 meters, which is 33% of the runway length.
The runway rollout alignment was also excessively misaligned by 94.6 meters from the centerline, which suggests that the pilot may have had difficulty maintaining control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were several issues that need to be addressed to improve the pilot's performance.
