Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,631 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,631 m of the 2,395 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 577 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, an Airbus A321, then departed from runway 29 at LOWW Vienna International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,551 meters, which accounted for 44% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 159 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 2 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 30 knots from a direction of 329 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 16 knots and a headwind of 25 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of LOWW Vienna International Airport and ascending from an altitude of 1,752 feet above sea level to 35,970 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,218 feet in 19 minutes and covering a distance of 115 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 1 mile northeast of Albrechtice nad Vltavou in the Czech Republic. This phase lasted for 33 minutes and covered a distance of 228 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting overhead Stadtallendorf in Germany and descending from 36,035 feet above sea level to 1,527 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,509 feet in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 104 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 23L at EDDL Düsseldorf Airport was made from the northeast, with a heading of 233.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,394 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 23L, which had a length of 2,395 meters. The threshold height was slightly above the target, and the threshold speed was also slightly above the target at 145 knots.
The touchdown point was 161 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 128 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was firm at -347 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.0 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius and a wind speed of 19 knots from a direction of 160 degrees, resulting in a crosswind of 18 knots and a headwind of 6 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,550 meters, which accounted for 65% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 454 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 82 minutes. The aircraft used 3,942 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at EDDL Düsseldorf Airport on runway 23L, achieving a score of 94.5%. The aircraft approached the runway from the north east, heading 233.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,394 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was conducted in a manner that met the required standards, with the aircraft landing safely on the designated runway.
The landing was executed with a slight deviation from the target threshold height, which was 56 feet agl, and a threshold speed that was slightly above the target at 145 knots. The touchdown point was 161 meters beyond the touchdown zone, indicating a slight overrun. However, the touchdown speed of 128 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -347 feet per minute (fpm) was firm, suggesting a controlled descent.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were characterized by a temperature of 4°C and a wind speed of 19 knots from a direction of 160°. The crosswind component was 18 knots, while the headwind component was 6 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft landed safely, with the runway touchdown position being slightly misaligned by 6.0 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance of 1,550 meters was 65% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the aircraft was well-controlled during the landing and rollout phases. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft meeting the required standards for a safe and controlled touchdown.
