Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,777 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,777 m of the 2,722 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,041 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Milan Malpensa International Airport, taking 18 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. Departure roll took place on runway 35R, with a takeoff distance of 205 meters, which was 7% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 164 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 13°C temperature and winds of 9 knots at 120°. The crosswind was 7 knots, while the tailwind was 6 knots. The enroute climb started overhead Ferno, Italy, where the aircraft ascended from 1,806 feet above sea level to 33,267 feet, an increase of 31,461 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 78 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 2 miles south of Mex, Switzerland, and lasted for 27 minutes, covering a distance of 192 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent overhead Seremange-Erzange, France, where it descended from 33,242 feet to 7,293 feet, a decrease of 25,950 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 84 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 1 mile east of Oupeye, Belgium, and lasted for 5 minutes, covering a distance of 24 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 1 mile south east of Geetbets, Belgium, where it descended from 6,789 feet to 2,914 feet, a decrease of 3,875 feet in 3 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 1 mile south of Hulshout, Belgium, and lasted for 4 minutes, covering a distance of 11 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final approach to runway 19 at Brussels Airport, heading 194.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,233 feet above ground level.
The landing took place on runway 19, which had a length of 2,722 meters. The threshold height was well above the target, while the threshold speed was good at 125 knots. The touchdown point was 620 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 117 knots and a touchdown rate of -160 feet per minute, which was good.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.0 meters from the centreline, while the local weather conditions remained the same, with a temperature of 13°C and winds of 9 knots at 120°. The crosswind was 9 knots, while the headwind was 2 knots. The total landing distance was 1,692 meters, which was 62% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 10.0 meters from the centreline.
The aircraft then taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 6 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 415 nautical miles, taking 87 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,764 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 aircraft successfully landed at Brussels Airport (EBBR) on runway 19, achieving a score of 83.2%. The final approach was initiated from the north, heading 194.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,233 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach speed and threshold speed were both within the acceptable limits, with a speed of 125 knots at the threshold.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was 117 knots, which is within the recommended range. The touchdown rate was also satisfactory, with a rate of -160 feet per minute (fpm). However, the touchdown point was located 620 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 13°C and a wind speed of 9 knots from a direction of 120°. This resulted in a crosswind of 9 knots and a headwind of 2 knots. Despite these conditions, the pilot successfully managed the aircraft's descent and touchdown.
The total landing distance was 1,692 meters, which accounts for 62% of the runway length. This is a relatively short landing distance, indicating that the pilot had a good control over the aircraft's descent and touchdown. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 10.0 meters from the centerline, suggesting that the pilot may have experienced some difficulty in maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing was considered satisfactory, with the pilot demonstrating good control over the aircraft's descent and touchdown. However, there is room for improvement in terms of maintaining a straight course during the rollout phase.
