Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 6,846 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 6,846 ft of the 11,991 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 4,200 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Boeing C17 aircraft departed from runway 04R at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport, a major international airport in Honolulu, Hawaii. The takeoff distance was 2,590 feet, which is 29% of the runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 147 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 61°F and a wind speed of 1 knot from a direction of 270°.
As the aircraft climbed away from the airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport. The aircraft climbed from an altitude of 1,016 feet above sea level to 2,470 feet, an increase of 1,454 feet in just 1 minute, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The climb was a smooth and efficient one, allowing the aircraft to reach its desired altitude quickly.
After reaching its cruising altitude, the aircraft began its enroute descent, which started 1 mile south of the town of Halawa. The descent was from an altitude of 2,449 feet above sea level to 210 feet, a decrease of 2,239 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 3 nautical miles. The descent was also a smooth and controlled one, allowing the aircraft to reach its desired altitude quickly.
As the aircraft approached the airport for landing, it began its final approach to runway 08R, which is a longer runway at the airport. The aircraft was approaching from the west, heading 91.0°, and was at an altitude of 183 feet above ground level (agl) at a distance of 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 281°.
The aircraft landed on runway 08R, which has a length of 11,991 feet. The threshold height at 83 feet agl was significantly above the target height, but the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed at 142 knots. The touchdown point was 2,816 feet beyond the touchdown zone, but the touchdown speed of 109 knots was good, and the touchdown rate was smooth at -119 feet per minute (fpm). The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 6,562 feet, which is 55% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was well under control during the landing roll. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area from the runway, taking 2 minutes and covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 7 nautical miles, and the flight took 4 minutes to complete. The aircraft used -18 pounds of fuel during the flight, indicating that it was able to make efficient use of its fuel resources. Overall, the flight was a smooth and efficient one, with the aircraft performing well in a variety of conditions.
The Boeing C17 aircraft successfully landed at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport, achieving an overall score of 85.2%. The final approach to runway 08R was initiated from the west, with a heading of 91.0° at an altitude of 183 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway. The aircraft's approach was characterized by a slightly below-target threshold speed of 142 knots, which was still within acceptable limits.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's speed was recorded at 109 knots, which was considered good. The touchdown rate was also smooth, with a descent rate of -119 feet per minute. However, the touchdown point was located 2,816 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 11 feet from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 281°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a slight tailwind of 2 knots. The total landing distance of 6,562 feet was 55% of the available runway length, which is considered acceptable.
One notable aspect of the landing was the runway rollout alignment, which was perfect. This indicates that the aircraft's brakes were applied smoothly and effectively, allowing the aircraft to come to a stop without any deviations from the centerline. Overall, while there were some minor deviations from the ideal landing, the Boeing C17 aircraft demonstrated a safe and controlled landing at PHNL Daniel K Inouye International Airport.
