Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,687 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,687 m of the 3,787 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 605 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 8 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 34 at Macau International Airport, VMMC. The takeoff distance was 974 meters, which accounted for 37% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 168 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 19°C temperature and a wind speed of 1 knot at 360 degrees. The crosswind was negligible, and the headwind was 1 knot. The enroute climb started 1 mile north of the airport and saw the aircraft ascend from 699 feet above sea level to 36,098 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,399 feet in 20 minutes, covering a distance of 76 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise began 65 miles south of Zhuhai Jinwan Airport, ZGSD, and lasted for 53 minutes, covering a distance of 358 nautical miles. The aircraft then started its enroute descent 16 miles north of Baihe Ning Ming Air Base, ZBAH, and descended from 36,051 feet above sea level to 1,314 feet above sea level, a decrease of 34,737 feet in 21 minutes, covering a distance of 101 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 11R at Noi Bai International Airport, VVNB, was made from the west, heading 107.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,263 feet above ground level. The landing was smooth, with a touchdown point 180 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 127 knots, and the touchdown rate was -170 feet per minute, both of which were considered good. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were 20°C temperature and a wind speed of 3 knots at 120 degrees. The crosswind was 1 knot, and the headwind was 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,597 meters, which accounted for 42% of the runway. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 545 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 104 minutes. The aircraft used 13,279 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at VVNB Noi Bai International Airport, achieving a high score of 98.2%. The final approach to runway 11R was conducted from the west, with a heading of 107.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,263 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was characterized by a good threshold height, indicating that the pilots maintained a safe and controlled descent.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft landed on the runway with a threshold speed of 138 knots, which is within the acceptable range. The touchdown point was located 180 meters beyond the touchdown zone, but this is not considered a significant deviation given the overall performance of the landing. The touchdown speed of 127 knots was also within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -170 feet per minute (fpm) was good, indicating a controlled and smooth touchdown.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 20°C and a wind speed of 3 knots at 120°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was 3 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach and landing. The runway length of 3,787 meters was sufficient to accommodate the aircraft's landing distance of 1,597 meters, which is approximately 42% of the runway length.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and ensured a safe and stable taxiing process. Overall, the landing was characterized by good performance and control, with the aircraft touching down smoothly and safely on the runway.
