Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 2,007 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,007 m of the 3,527 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 651 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 19 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777-300, then departed from runway 15R at OERK King Khaled International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The takeoff distance was 3,015 meters, which was 72% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 198 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 19 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 7 knots at 124 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 7 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 4 miles south of the airport and reaching an altitude of 36,411 feet above sea level in 17 minutes, covering a distance of 70 nautical miles.
The enroute climb was followed by a level cruise, which started 2 miles northwest of Marat, Riyadh Region, Saudi Arabia, and lasted for 247 minutes, covering a distance of 1,550 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb, this time starting 5 miles west of Radovnica, Central Serbia, and reaching an altitude of 37,568 feet above sea level in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 17 nautical miles.
The second enroute climb was followed by another level cruise, which started 7 miles northwest of Vranje, Central Serbia, and lasted for 92 minutes, covering a distance of 759 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 2 miles south of Warstein, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, and descending from 37,387 feet above sea level to 1,282 feet above sea level in 28 minutes, covering a distance of 147 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 18R at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was made from the north, heading 183.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,276 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown point 228 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 136 knots, which was good, and the touchdown rate was also good at -191 feet per minute.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1 degree Celsius, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 90 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. The total landing distance was 1,920 meters, which was 54% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centreline.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 15 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 2,559 nautical miles, taking a total of 422 minutes, and the aircraft used 47,325 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 777-300 aircraft successfully landed at EHAM Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, achieving a high score of 94.6%. The final approach to runway 18R was conducted from the north, with a heading of 183.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,276 feet above ground level (agl).
The aircraft touched down on the runway with a good threshold height, and the threshold speed was also satisfactory at 145 knots. The touchdown point was located 228 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is slightly outside the recommended area. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -191 feet per minute (fpm) was also good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of -1°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 90°. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots. Despite these conditions, the aircraft landed safely and efficiently.
The total landing distance of 1,920 meters was 54% of the available runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. However, the runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 7.9 meters from the centerline, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended path during the landing roll.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the aircraft was able to come to a stop within a reasonable distance from the runway threshold. The slight deviations from the recommended touchdown zone and runway rollout alignment may be addressed through further training or adjustments to the aircraft's approach and landing procedures.
