Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,602 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,602 ft of the 12,362 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,736 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 4 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-MAX8, then departed from runway 01L at PABE Bethel Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,886 feet, which accounted for 45% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 153 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 13°F and a wind speed of 12 knots from a direction of 311°. This resulted in a crosswind of 12 knots and a headwind of 4 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile west of Bethel, and climbed from an altitude of 1,089 feet above sea level to 35,107 feet above sea level, an increase of 34,018 feet, in 15 minutes and covering a distance of 91 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 36 miles south of Napaimute Pioneer Airfield (4AK8) and lasted for 20 minutes, covering a distance of 159 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 37 miles northwest of Drift River Airport (3AK5), and descended from an altitude of 33,679 feet above sea level to 1,079 feet above sea level, a decrease of 32,600 feet, in 16 minutes and covering a distance of 88 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07R at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (PANC) was made from the west, with a heading of 90.0°, at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 947 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 07R, which had a length of 12,362 feet. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 144 knots.
The touchdown point was 362 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was good. The touchdown rate was also good at -189 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 21 feet from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 140°, resulting in a crosswind of 1 knot and a headwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 5,328 feet, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 4 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 345 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 61 minutes. The aircraft used 5,160 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-MAX8 aircraft successfully landed at PANC Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, achieving a score of 96.5%. The final approach to runway 07R was conducted from the west, heading 90.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 947 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on the runway, with the threshold height being satisfactory. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target speed of 144 knots. The touchdown point was located 362 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, which may indicate a slight deviation from the intended landing spot. The touchdown speed of 132 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -189 feet per minute (fpm) was also good.
The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 21 feet from the centerline, which may require some adjustments during the landing process. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from a direction of 140°. The crosswind component was minimal at 1 knot, while the headwind component was also 1 knot.
The total landing distance of 5,328 feet was 43% of the available runway length of 12,362 feet. This indicates that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was very good, suggesting that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the landing process and was able to align the aircraft with the runway centerline.
Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft achieving a good touchdown speed and rate, and a satisfactory runway rollout alignment. However, the slight deviation from the intended touchdown zone and the misaligned runway touchdown position may require some attention during future landings.
