Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 910 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 910 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 96 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 24 at EDLH Hamm-Lippewiesen Airfield, where the aircraft, a Cessna C172, took off with a takeoff distance of 234 meters, which accounted for 38% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 67 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius.
The enroute level cruise started shortly after takeoff, with the aircraft flying overhead Hamm, a city located in the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. This initial level cruise lasted for 1 minute and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The aircraft then began an enroute climb, ascending from 1,171 feet above sea level to 2,689 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,517 feet, over a distance of 5 nautical miles in 3 minutes.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 3 miles north east of Hamm and lasting for 12 minutes, covering a distance of 15 nautical miles. The aircraft then began a descent from 3,097 feet above sea level to 2,576 feet above sea level, a decrease of 522 feet, over a distance of 2 nautical miles in 2 minutes.
The flight continued with several more level cruise and climb phases, with the aircraft flying over various locations in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, including Lippstadt, Geseke, and Brilon. Notably, the aircraft climbed from 2,341 feet above sea level to 2,836 feet above sea level, an increase of 495 feet, over a distance of 3 nautical miles in 2 minutes, and then from 2,518 feet above sea level to 3,659 feet above sea level, an increase of 1,142 feet, over a distance of 2 nautical miles in 2 minutes.
The final approach to runway 23 at EDLA Arnsberg-Menden Airfield was made from the north east, with the aircraft flying at a heading of 230.0 degrees and 1 nautical mile from the runway. The landing was successful, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 49 knots and a touchdown rate of 38 feet per minute. The touchdown distance was 93 meters, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centerline.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11 degrees Celsius. The total flight distance was 81 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 74 minutes. The aircraft used 29 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna C172 aircraft successfully landed at EDLA Arnsberg-Menden Airfield, achieving a high score of 99.2%. The final approach was conducted from the north-east, heading 230.0° at a distance of 1 nautical mile and an altitude of 366 feet above ground level (agl). This indicates a precise and controlled descent into the airport.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 23, which has a length of 910 meters. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 57 knots was also within the acceptable range. The touchdown distance of 93 meters was also good, demonstrating the pilot's ability to control the aircraft's descent and speed. Furthermore, the touchdown speed of 49 knots was within the desired range, indicating a smooth and controlled landing.
One minor deviation was noted, where the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 6.8 meters from the centreline. However, this deviation did not significantly impact the overall landing performance. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 11°C, which did not appear to affect the aircraft's performance.
The touchdown rate of 38 feet per minute (fpm) was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled landing. Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilot demonstrated excellent control and precision in navigating the aircraft to a safe touchdown on the runway.
