Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,039 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 327 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A320 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Key West International Airport, taking approximately 8 minutes to cover a distance of 2 nautical miles. The departure roll took place on runway 09, with the aircraft lifting off after a takeoff distance of 926 meters, which accounted for 63% of the runway length. The liftoff speed was 150 knots.
As the aircraft took to the skies, it encountered local weather conditions of 28°C temperature and a wind speed of 15 knots at 90 degrees. The crosswind was negligible, but the aircraft benefited from a 15-knot headwind. The enroute climb began overhead Stock Island, Florida, where the aircraft ascended from 1,062 feet above sea level to 31,024 feet, an increase of 29,963 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 82 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, starting 4 miles northwest of Everglades City, Florida. This phase lasted for 29 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 203 nautical miles. The enroute descent phase began 4 miles east of Seville, Florida, where the aircraft descended from 30,969 feet to 3,270 feet, a decrease of 27,699 feet in 14 minutes, covering a distance of 69 nautical miles.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, this time starting 3 miles northwest of Whitehouse Naval Outlying Field, Jacksonville, Florida. This phase lasted for just 3 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 5 nautical miles. The final descent phase began 3 miles southwest of Nassau Village-Ratliff, Florida, where the aircraft descended from 2,551 feet to 1,319 feet, a decrease of 1,232 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 08 at Jacksonville International Airport took place from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 70.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,282 feet above ground level. The landing on runway 08 took place on a runway length of 3,039 meters, with the threshold height being slightly above the target. The threshold speed was good at 131 knots, and the touchdown distance was also good at 326 meters.
However, the touchdown speed was a little fast at 128 knots, and the touchdown rate was heavy at -612 feet per minute. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, and the local weather conditions at the time of landing were 18°C temperature. The total landing distance was 1,242 meters, accounting for 41% of the runway length. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took approximately 4 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 371 nautical miles, taking a total of 76 minutes, and the aircraft used 2,944 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Airbus A320 successfully landed at KJAX Jacksonville International Airport, achieving a score of 95.3%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 70.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,282 feet above ground level (agl). The final approach was executed with precision, setting the stage for a smooth touchdown.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 08, which has a length of 3,039 meters. The threshold height at 59 feet agl was slightly above the target, indicating a minor deviation from the ideal landing height. However, the threshold speed was well within the acceptable range at 131 knots, demonstrating the pilot's control over the aircraft's descent.
The touchdown distance of 326 meters was satisfactory, indicating that the aircraft was able to slow down effectively after touchdown. However, the touchdown speed of 128 knots was slightly faster than desired, which may have contributed to the heavy touchdown rate of -612 feet per minute (fpm). A heavier touchdown rate can put additional stress on the aircraft's landing gear and may require more aggressive braking to bring the aircraft to a stop.
Despite the minor issues with touchdown speed and rate, the runway touchdown alignment was perfect, indicating that the aircraft was properly aligned with the runway centerline. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 18°C, did not appear to have any significant impact on the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,242 meters, which accounts for 41% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, demonstrating the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft during the critical phase of landing. Overall, the landing was successful, with the aircraft coming to a stop in a safe and controlled manner.
