Maintain the centreline
A small uncorrected heading error at 40 knots becomes a metre of offset per second by 100 knots, noticed only at rotation, producing a crabbed liftoff. Root cause is nearly always eyes on the tape instead of the far end of the runway. Small heading changes displace a distant point visibly long before the nearby centreline stripes look wrong.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,443 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,443 m of the 3,894 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 595 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight took off from Frankfurt Airport, where the aircraft, an Airbus A320, taxied from the parking to the runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 6 minutes. Departing from runway 25C, the aircraft's takeoff distance was 1,260 meters, which is 32% of the runway, and it lifted off at a speed of 171 knots. The local weather was characterized by a temperature of 20°C, with wind blowing at 24 knots at an angle of 219°. The aircraft encountered a crosswind of 12 knots and a headwind of 21 knots.
After departure, the enroute climb started approximately 1 mile south of Kelsterbach, in Hessen, Germany. During this climb, the aircraft ascended from an initial altitude of 1,364 feet above sea level to a maximum altitude of 37,193 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,829 feet, over a distance of 184 nautical miles, in 27 minutes.
Next, the enroute level cruise began approximately 4 miles south-west of Sargans, in the Kanton St. Gallen, Switzerland region. This cruise phase lasted for 25 minutes, during which the aircraft covered a distance of 213 nautical miles. After the cruise phase, the enroute descent started approximately 5 miles south of Premilcuore, in the Emilia-Romagna, Italy region. During this descent, the aircraft descended from a maximum altitude of 37,700 feet above sea level to an altitude of 1,303 feet above sea level, a decrease of 36,398 feet, over a distance of 120 nautical miles, in 30 minutes.
The final approach took place to runway 16L at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, with the aircraft approaching from the north at a heading of 163.0° and 4 nautical miles from touchdown. Local weather conditions at the destination airport were characterized by a temperature of 27°C, with wind blowing at 9 knots at an angle of 240°.
The aircraft touched down on runway 16L, which is 3,894 meters long, with good threshold alignment and speed. However, the touchdown point was 180 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was slightly high at 130 knots. After touchdown, the aircraft's rollout alignment on the runway was very good. The total landing distance was 2,363 meters, which is 61% of the runway length.
After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking from the runway, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in 4 minutes. Overall, the total flight distance was 526 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 92 minutes, during which the aircraft consumed 4,001 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A320 performed a successful landing at LIRF Rome–Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, with an overall score of 96.2%. The aircraft began its final approach to runway 16L from the north, flying at a heading of 163.0° at an altitude of 1,280 feet above ground level (agl) and a distance of 4 nautical miles from the runway.
As the aircraft approached the runway, it was crucial to maintain the correct speed and alignment. The threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed of 139 knots was within the acceptable range. A good threshold speed is essential to ensure a smooth and controlled descent onto the runway.
The touchdown point was located 180 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which, although not optimal, was still within the desired landing limits. The touchdown speed of 130 knots was slightly higher than recommended, indicating areas that require attention in terms of deceleration control during the final stages of the approach.
The touchdown rate of -222 feet per minute (fpm) was deemed fair. This measure evaluates how smoothly the aircraft decelerated upon touching down, with higher negative values indicating a more rapid deceleration. A higher touchdown rate often leads to uneven roll-out and can cause the aircraft's nose to rise, making it difficult to control and stabilize the plane.
The crosswind of 9 knots and headwind of 2 knots had a moderate impact on the aircraft's approach. The runway's length of 3,894 meters allowed for a relatively short landing distance, with the total distance covering 61% of the runway. Despite this, the aircraft's rollout alignment was very good, demonstrating effective control of the plane as it rolled along the runway surface.
Local weather conditions presented a temperature of 27°C and a relatively light wind speed of 9 knots at 240°. These conditions were considered favorable for the landing, with no major obstacles or turbulence that could have impacted the aircraft's descent and touchdown.
