Know your rotation speed
A typical trainer rotates in the mid-50s of knots - a 172 at around 55 KIAS, climbing out at a Vy in the low 70s, though check your own POH rather than memorising Cessna's numbers - and the transferable rule is that Vr sits just above the stall speed in takeoff configuration. Rotate early because "it felt ready" and the aircraft lifts off inside ground effect, where induced drag is reduced, then climbs out of it into more drag. On a marginal-performance day the result is an aircraft that lifts off and then refuses to climb, sagging back towards the runway.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: seven checks where the approach path is 300 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out. These checks are the approach's score.
At the 300 ft gate: glideslope 5.1° against the runway's 3°.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 11,973 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 354 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Cessna 208B departed runway 04 at KAVX Catalina Airport, Avalon, California, with a takeoff distance of 2,176 feet, representing 73% of the available runway length. The aircraft lifted off at a speed of 101 knots, with a 3-knot headwind and a calm crosswind. The local temperature was 61°F, and the wind direction was from 49°.
As the aircraft climbed out of KAVX, it reached an altitude of 2,709 feet above sea level, an increase of 845 feet in just 2 minutes, covering a distance of 6 nautical miles. The enroute climb phase was characterized by a series of level cruises, with the aircraft maintaining a steady altitude for short periods before resuming its ascent. Notably, the climb from 4,078 feet to 7,095 feet in 5 minutes, covering 13 nautical miles, was particularly steep, with an increase of 3,017 feet. The aircraft eventually began its descent, reducing its altitude from 6,866 feet to 4,466 feet in 3 minutes, covering 6 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 07 at KPMD Palmdale Regional Airport was made from the west, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 86.0° at 1 nautical mile and 494 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 348 feet and a touchdown speed of 45 knots. The total landing distance was 1,577 feet, representing 13% of the available runway length. The aircraft used a total of 220 pounds of fuel during the flight, covering a distance of 89 nautical miles in 36 minutes.
The Cessna 208B touched down on runway 07 at KPMD Palmdale Regional Airport / USAF Plant 42 Airport with a satisfactory approach quality, demonstrating good control and precision. The aircraft descended from an altitude of 494 ft agl at 1 nm from the runway, aligning with the runway heading of 86.0°. The approach was conducted in a 2 kt headwind, with a crosswind of 1 kt, and a temperature of 59 °F.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft displayed a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 50 kt, which was well below the target speed to avoid stalling. The touchdown distance of 348 ft was within acceptable limits, and the touchdown speed of 45 kt was also satisfactory. However, the touchdown rate of -285 fpm was slightly below the optimal rate, indicating a slightly longer deceleration phase. The runway touchdown alignment was very good, with the aircraft centered on the runway.
The rollout phase was characterized by a very good alignment, with the aircraft maintaining its centerline position throughout. The total landing distance of 1,577 ft was 13% of the runway length, indicating a relatively short landing distance. Overall, the landing performance of the Cessna 208B was satisfactory, with a score of 93.3%. The pilot demonstrated good control and precision throughout the approach, touchdown, and rollout phases, resulting in a safe and efficient landing.
