Flight Score
Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 2,386 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 2,386 m of the 3,026 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,137 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Düsseldorf Airport, taking approximately 9 minutes and covering a distance of 4 nautical miles. The aircraft then departed from runway 23L, with a takeoff distance of 1,248 meters, which accounted for 52% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 156 knots, and the local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 16°C, a wind speed of 8 knots at 234°, with no crosswind but a headwind of 8 knots.
As the aircraft climbed out of Düsseldorf Airport, it began its enroute climb, which started overhead the airport and continued for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 145 nautical miles. During this time, the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,136 feet above sea level to 36,982 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,846 feet. The enroute level cruise then began 2 miles east of Peine, Germany, and lasted for 36 minutes, covering a distance of 280 nautical miles.
The aircraft then began its enroute descent, which started 2 miles south of Zabno, Poland, and continued for 25 minutes, covering a distance of 131 nautical miles. During this time, the aircraft descended from an altitude of 37,089 feet above sea level to 4,071 feet above sea level, a decrease of 33,018 feet. The enroute level cruise then began again, this time 1 mile south east of Sobienie Jeziory, Poland, and lasted for only 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to Warsaw Chopin Airport began 2 miles south east of Czaplinek, Poland, and the aircraft descended from an altitude of 4,067 feet above sea level to 1,663 feet above sea level in just 4 minutes, covering a distance of 12 nautical miles. The final approach was made to runway 33, with the aircraft heading 332.0° at an altitude of 1,295 feet above ground level and 4 nautical miles from the runway.
The landing on runway 33 was successful, with the touchdown point being 723 meters beyond the touchdown zone. The touchdown speed was 128 knots, which was good, but the touchdown rate was fair at -274 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 7.3 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 19°C, a wind speed of 11 knots at 107°, with a crosswind of 7 knots and a tailwind of 8 knots.
The total landing distance was 2,307 meters, which accounted for 76% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good, and the aircraft was able to taxi to the parking area in just 5 minutes, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 585 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 106 minutes, with the aircraft using 5,066 kilograms of fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft successfully landed at EPWA Warsaw Chopin Airport, with a score of 82.9%. The final approach to runway 33 was initiated from the south east, heading 332.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,295 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft's approach was conducted in a manner that met the required standards, with a touchdown speed of 128 knots, which was within the acceptable range.
However, there were some minor deviations from the target values during the landing. The threshold height at 79 feet agl was well above the target, indicating that the aircraft was slightly higher than expected when it reached the runway threshold. Additionally, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 139 knots, suggesting that the aircraft was slightly faster than required when it touched down.
The touchdown point was 723 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a significant deviation from the ideal landing position. This may have been due to the aircraft's speed and altitude at the time of touchdown, as well as any crosswind or tailwind effects. The touchdown rate of -274 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, indicating that the aircraft's descent was not as smooth as it could have been.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 19°C and winds of 11 knots at 107°. The crosswind component was 7 knots, while the tailwind component was 8 knots. These conditions may have contributed to the aircraft's slightly off-center touchdown position, which was 7.3 meters from the centerline.
Despite the minor deviations, the aircraft's runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase. The total landing distance of 2,307 meters was 76% of the runway length, which is within the acceptable range. Overall, the landing was successful, but there is room for improvement in terms of precision and control.
