Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway. They are the approach's score: the checks passed out of the checks that ran.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,283 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 377 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Helsinki Vantaa Airport, the Airbus A350-900 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took 5 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. As it reached the runway, it initiated its departure roll on runway 22R, accelerating to a liftoff speed of 152 knots. The takeoff distance of 2,024 meters was 68% of the runway length, and the aircraft lifted off with a local wind of 5 knots at 239 degrees, resulting in a 1-knot crosswind and a 5-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its initial cruising altitude, it began its enroute climb 2 miles west of Helsinki Vantaa Airport, increasing its altitude from 1,139 feet above sea level to 37,999 feet in 13 minutes, covering a distance of 146 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered a level cruise, which lasted 51 minutes and covered 1,559 nautical miles. This was followed by a second enroute climb, which took place 42 miles northwest of Tasiilaq, Greenland, and resulted in an increase of 2,000 feet in altitude in just 2 minutes. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, which lasted 62 minutes and covered 1,978 nautical miles. As the aircraft began its descent, it started 2 miles southwest of Luxemburg, Wisconsin, and descended from 40,000 feet to 13,999 feet in 7 minutes, covering a distance of 80 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 28C at Chicago O'Hare International Airport was initiated from the east, with the aircraft heading 270 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,253 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown distance of 379 meters and a touchdown speed of 133 knots. However, the touchdown speed was a little fast, and the touchdown rate was firm at -375 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8 meters from the centerline. The total landing distance was 1,395 meters, which was 43% of the runway length. After landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took 3 minutes and covered a distance of 2 nautical miles. The total flight distance was 3,923 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 159 minutes, with a fuel consumption of 49,156 kilograms.
The Airbus A350-900 touched down on runway 28C at KORD Chicago O'Hare International Airport with a good threshold height, allowing the pilots to maintain a stable approach. The threshold speed was well-managed at 134 kt, indicating a smooth transition from the approach to the touchdown phase. However, the touchdown speed of 133 kt was slightly above the optimal range, resulting in a firm touchdown rate of -375 fpm.
The aircraft's touchdown distance of 379 m was within the acceptable limits, demonstrating good control and precision during the landing phase. Unfortunately, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 8.0 m from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach or a minor issue with the aircraft's directional control. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 19 °C and a gentle headwind of 6 kt, did not pose any significant challenges to the landing.
The total landing distance of 1,395 m, which accounted for 43% of the runway length, was reasonable given the aircraft's size and weight. The rollout phase was notable for its excellent alignment, with the aircraft staying on course and maintaining a stable path along the runway. Overall, the landing performance was satisfactory, with a score of 95.9% reflecting the pilots' skill and the aircraft's capabilities.
