Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,028 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 726 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Taxiing from the parking area to the runway at Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX) took approximately 8 minutes, covering a distance of 2 nautical miles. The Airbus A350-900 then began its departure roll on runway 25R, utilizing 43% of the 7,000-foot runway to achieve a takeoff distance of 4,792 feet. Liftoff speed was reached at 165 knots, with a local temperature of 69°F and a 6-knot headwind.
The enroute climb phase commenced overhead KLAX, with the aircraft ascending from 1,028 feet above sea level to 40,835 feet, an increase of 39,807 feet in 34 minutes, covering a distance of 243 nautical miles. Following this, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, lasting 51 minutes and covering 1,790 nautical miles, before beginning a descent phase 5 miles southeast of Logue Airport (PA45). The aircraft descended from 40,901 feet to 29,000 feet in 5 minutes, covering 49 nautical miles. The subsequent level cruise phase, lasting 2 minutes and covering 16 nautical miles, was followed by another descent phase, which saw the aircraft descend from 29,000 feet to 1,312 feet in 15 minutes, covering 81 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 22L at Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR) was initiated from the north-east, with the aircraft maintaining a heading of 205.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,293 feet above ground level. The landing was executed on the 7,028-foot runway, with a touchdown distance of 728 feet and a touchdown speed of 129 knots, slightly above the recommended threshold speed. The aircraft utilized 37% of the runway, with a perfect runway touchdown alignment and rollout alignment. The total landing distance was 2,629 feet, and the aircraft taxied to the parking area in 6 minutes, covering a distance of 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 2,188 nautical miles, with a flight time of 123 minutes and a fuel consumption of 54,948 pounds.
The aircraft, an Airbus A350-900, commenced its final approach to runway 22L at KEWR Newark Liberty International Airport from the north east, aligning with the runway at a heading of 205.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,293 feet above ground level. The approach quality was excellent, with a good threshold height and a threshold speed of 130 knots, well within the acceptable range. As the aircraft descended onto the runway, it touched down at a distance of 728 feet, which was within the expected parameters.
The touchdown characteristics were notable, with a speed of 129 knots, slightly above the ideal range. However, the touchdown rate of -241 feet per minute was fair, indicating a controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, with the aircraft centered on the runway. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 41°F and a 3-knot headwind, contributed to a smooth landing. The crosswind component was minimal, at 1 knot, which further facilitated a stable touchdown.
Following touchdown, the aircraft maintained perfect centerline alignment during the rollout phase, demonstrating excellent control and stability. The total landing distance of 2,629 feet, which accounted for 37% of the runway length, was within the acceptable range. Overall, the landing was highly successful, with a score of 99.7% reflecting the high level of proficiency and control displayed by the crew.
