Work on the flare
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,639 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,639 m of the 2,693 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 493 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight started with the Airbus A321 taxiing from the parking to the runway, a journey that took nine minutes and covered two nautical miles. Departure roll took place on runway 03 at Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport, with a takeoff distance of 1,391 meters, which is 56% of the runway's length. Liftoff speed was recorded at 162 kts.
Throughout the takeoff roll, the local weather conditions included a temperature of 15°C, wind blowing at 22 kts from a direction of 29°. This created a headwind component of 22 kts and minimal crosswind effect. As the aircraft gained altitude, it overtook the Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport at Rheinmünster, marking the start of the enroute climb phase.
During the enroute climb, the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,432 feet above sea level to 27,286 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 68 nautical miles in 14 minutes and achieving an overall increase of 25,854 feet. Following a series of climbs and descents, the aircraft entered an enroute level cruise phase 1 mile southwest of Winkelhaid, lasting 5 minutes and covering 10 nautical miles.
The flight proceeded with several changes in altitude, with the final descent occurring over Tuchenbach in two minutes, during which the aircraft decreased altitude by 1,367 feet from 3,670 feet above sea level to 2,303 feet above sea level, covering a distance of 4 nautical miles.
For the final approach to runway 10 at Nuremberg Airport, the aircraft established a heading of 99° at an altitude of 1,259 feet above ground level, approximately 4 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The landing took place on a runway length of 2,693 meters, although the threshold height was above the target at 64 feet above ground level.
The touchdown point was 77 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 134 kts recorded, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was firm at -398 fpm, and the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline.
The total landing distance was 1,558 meters, accounting for 58% of the runway's length. Throughout the landing process, the runway rollout alignment was found to be very good. Following the landing, the aircraft took 5 minutes to taxi to the parking area, covering a total distance of less than 1 nautical mile.
In conclusion, the total flight distance was 176 nautical miles, and the entire flight lasted 55 minutes. The aircraft used 2,805 kilograms of fuel throughout the duration of the flight.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Nuremberg Airport (EDDN) on runway 10 following a final approach from the west. The aircraft maintained a heading of 99.0° and was at an altitude of 1,259 feet above ground level (agl) when it was 4 nautical miles away from the runway. Given the circumstances, the approach and subsequent landing were deemed satisfactory with a grade of 92.2%.
The approach culminated in a successful touchdown, albeit at a slightly higher speed than the target. The touchdown point was 77 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which was still within an acceptable margin. However, the landing speed of 134 knots was a little faster than desired, indicating that the pilots might have been able to maintain better control to achieve a smoother touchdown.
The pilots also failed to meet the threshold height target, touching down at an altitude of 64 feet agl, which is higher than the target height. Nonetheless, the threshold speed was only slightly above the target at 141 knots. The touchdown rate of -398 feet per minute (fpm) was described as firm, suggesting a strong touch on the runway. A minor deviation also occurred as the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.9 meters from the centerline.
Weather conditions at the time of the landing featured a temperature of 10°C and a moderate wind at 11 knots at a direction of 20°. As a result, there was an 11-knot crosswind, but only a 2-knot headwind, which had a minimal impact on the landing. The aircraft's final landing distance was 1,558 meters, which accounts for about 58% of the runway's total length. This suggests that the pilots could have benefited from a slightly longer stretch of runway to fully exploit the aircraft's landing capabilities.
Despite the minor issues and deviations, the landing procedure overall had some redeeming qualities. The runway rollout alignment was described as very good, demonstrating the pilots' excellent control over the aircraft during the rollout phase. This indicates that they successfully transitioned from the touchdown to the rollout phase, maintaining good alignment and control over the aircraft's trajectory as it came to a stop on the runway.
