Improve the pattern downwind leg
The 45-degrees-behind-the-wing cue assumes you can turn your head and use peripheral vision. Downwind spacing cues like "put the wingtip halfway up the strut" assume a fixed, known eyepoint. Neither survives a monitor unmodified. If you fly on a fixed monitor, stop pretending and fly a numbers-based circuit.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate for a circuit: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate is an instrument-approach check and does not apply.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 808 m of the approach.
Plan view — the full 808 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 182 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a departure roll from runway 04 at EGCW Welshpool Airport, where the aircraft, an American Champion Scout, successfully took off after covering a distance of 189 meters, which accounted for 23% of the runway. The liftoff speed was recorded at 61 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were characterized by a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius and a gentle wind of 1 knot blowing from the northwest.
As the aircraft entered the left-hand pattern, it did so from runway 04, covering a distance of less than 1 nautical mile in just 47 seconds. The subsequent left-hand pattern crosswind maneuver was completed in 69 seconds, with the aircraft maintaining a steady course. The pattern downwind turn was notable for its distance of 2 nautical miles and an angle to the runway of 45 degrees, which was achieved at an altitude of 117.5 degrees.
The final approach to runway 04 was made from the southwest, with the aircraft heading at 32.0 degrees and at an altitude of 0 nautical miles and 177 feet above ground level. The landing was executed smoothly, with the aircraft touching down on the runway at a speed of 39 knots and a distance of 180 meters. The touchdown rate was excellent, with a rate of -66 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The total landing distance was 640 meters, which accounted for 79% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The total flight distance was 3 nautical miles, which was completed in 8 minutes, and the aircraft used a total of -3 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The American Champion Scout, registration LIONS 26 ANALOG, successfully landed at EGCW Welshpool Airport on runway 04. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 32.0° at an altitude of 177 feet above ground level (agl) and 0 nautical miles from the runway threshold. The pilot maintained a steady course, adhering to the standard final approach procedure.
Upon reaching the runway threshold, the aircraft touched down at a speed of 39 knots, which is well within the recommended threshold speed of 54 knots. The touchdown distance of 180 meters was also satisfactory, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The aircraft's rate of descent at touchdown was an impressive -66 feet per minute, showcasing the pilot's exceptional skill and control.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 15°C and a gentle wind of 1 knot from the northwest. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each, which further contributed to the smooth landing. The runway length of 808 meters was sufficient for the aircraft to come to a stop, with a total landing distance of 640 meters, which is 79% of the runway length.
The runway rollout alignment was perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft throughout the landing process. The overall performance of the American Champion Scout, LIONS 26 ANALOG, was impressive, with a score of 96.0% for the landing. This achievement is a testament to the pilot's expertise and the aircraft's capabilities.
