Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
At the 500 ft gate: speed above the reference speed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 7,404 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 1,971 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The Cessna CJ4 aircraft departed from General Mitchell International Airport at KMKE, taxiing for only 2 minutes to reach the runway 07R. The aircraft then took to the skies, lifting off at 134 kt after a takeoff distance of 1,662 ft, which is just 21% of the available runway length.
Upon departure, the aircraft encountered local weather conditions with a temperature of 63°F and winds of 2 kt at 270°. This resulted in a negligible tailwind and minimal crosswind impact, making for a relatively straightforward takeoff.
Once airborne, the aircraft entered an enroute climb phase, commencing 1,716 ft above sea level and reaching a maximum altitude of 24,559 ft after an ascent of 22,844 ft in just 9 minutes, spanning a distance of 34 nm. Following a significant climb phase, the aircraft transitioned into level cruise, flying at a steady altitude of 24,283 ft for an uninterrupted 58 minutes. During this cruise phase, the aircraft covered a considerable distance of 413 nm.
Subsequently, the aircraft initiated descent from an altitude of 24,283 ft to reach the airport of destination. This descent occurred over a distance of 59 nm within 12 minutes, covering a total reduction in altitude of 20,478 ft to 3,805 ft above sea level. Another brief level cruise of just 5 minutes ensued, with the aircraft covering a short distance of 2 nm 5 miles south of Chickamauga (Georgia, United States), after which the aircraft initiated another descent, dropping 1,801 ft in just 3 minutes to reach an altitude of 1,996 ft above sea level.
Finally approaching its destination of runway 02 at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field), the aircraft executed a smooth final approach at a heading of 17°, beginning from 4 nm and 1,296 ft above ground level. Landing on this runway, which has a length of 7,404 ft and provided a good threshold height, proved challenging due to an excessive threshold speed of 114 kt. The touchdown point was located 570 ft beyond the touchdown zone, which was partly attributed to a touchdown speed that was considered relatively fast, at 97 kt. Nonetheless, the touchdown rate was satisfactory, at -176 fpm.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's rollout alignment was almost perfect, allowing for a smooth and controlled taxiing to the parking area. The total flight distance reached a remarkable 523 nm, with an average flight time of 92 minutes and utilized zero pounds of fuel throughout the journey.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation performed a successful landing at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (Lovell Field) with a high degree of proficiency, scoring 96.8% overall. The aircraft approached the runway from the south, heading 17.0°, at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,296 feet above ground level (agl) with a visual reference of the runway 02 ahead.
The landing itself took place on a runway approximately 7,404 feet long, with an adequate amount of runway length available for the aircraft's landing. Notably, the threshold height was well-maintained, indicating that the pilots successfully managed the aircraft's descent to the optimal level in relation to the runway's elevation. However, the threshold speed was slightly higher than optimal, reaching a speed of 114 knots.
The touchdown point was located 570 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was recorded at 97 knots, slightly above the recommended speed. Despite this minor deviation, the touchdown rate of 176 feet per minute was considered to be good, suggesting a controlled landing. Moreover, the alignment of the aircraft during touchdown was excellent, aligning squarely with the runway's centerline.
Weather conditions at the time of landing included a relatively calm atmosphere, with temperatures at 59°F, light winds blowing at 2 knots from 270°, and minimal crosswind (2 kt) or tailwind (1 kt) effects. Considering these factors, the aircraft's total landing distance of 3,280 feet, accounting for 44% of the runway length, was reasonable. During the rollout phase, the aircraft remained perfectly aligned with the runway centerline, showcasing excellent piloting skills.
Overall, the Cessna CJ4 Citation's pilot demonstrated exceptional skills and precision during the landing at KCHA Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, ultimately scoring an impressive 96.8% on the landing assessment.
