Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,990 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 513 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking area to the runway, which took approximately 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-700, then departed from runway 02 at RPVI Iloilo International Airport. The takeoff distance was 1,079 meters, which accounted for 43% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 145 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at a direction of 61 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south east of Cabatuan in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. The climb took 31 minutes and covered a distance of 215 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from an altitude of 1,225 feet above sea level to 38,887 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles north east of Calamba in the Calabarzon region of the Philippines. This phase lasted for 46 minutes and covered a distance of 1,056 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 20 miles north of RJX8 Suwanosejima Airport in Toshima, Kagoshima-ken, Japan. The descent took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 175 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from an altitude of 39,357 feet to 1,295 feet.
The final approach to runway 32 at RJFU Nagasaki Airport was made from the south east, with the aircraft heading at 318.0 degrees at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 32, which had a length of 2,990 meters. The threshold height was good, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 142 knots. The touchdown point was 93 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the touchdown speed was 132 knots, which was a little fast. However, the touchdown rate was smooth at -149 feet per minute, and the runway touchdown alignment was very good.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots at a direction of 319 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 6 knots. The total landing distance was 995 meters, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, and the taxiing period from the runway to the parking area took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile.
Overall, the flight covered a total distance of 1,452 nautical miles and took 98 minutes to complete. The aircraft used 7,838 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Boeing 737-700 aircraft successfully landed at RJFU Nagasaki Airport, achieving a high score of 99.3%. The final approach to runway 32 was conducted from the south east, with a heading of 318.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,268 feet above ground level.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down 93 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone, which is a relatively minor deviation. However, the touchdown speed of 132 knots was slightly above the target speed, indicating that the pilots may have been able to make adjustments to achieve a more optimal touchdown speed.
The touchdown rate of -149 feet per minute was smooth, indicating that the aircraft's descent was well-controlled and stable. The runway touchdown alignment was also very good, suggesting that the pilots maintained a consistent and accurate approach to the runway.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were relatively calm, with a temperature of 4°C and a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 319°. This resulted in a negligible crosswind component and a moderate headwind component of 6 knots, which may have contributed to the slightly fast touchdown speed.
The total landing distance of 995 meters was 33% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft was able to stop within a reasonable distance after touchdown. The runway rollout alignment was perfect, suggesting that the pilots maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase and were able to bring it to a safe stop.
Overall, the landing was successful, and the pilots demonstrated good control and precision during the approach and touchdown phases. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of achieving a more optimal touchdown speed.
