Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 8,700 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 8,700 ft of the 13,167 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 3,156 ft past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 14 minutes and covered a distance of 3 nautical miles. The aircraft, a Boeing 777F, then departed from runway 30R at OBBI Bahrain International Airport. The takeoff distance was 6,416 feet, which accounted for 58% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 174 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 6 knots at 320 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft began its enroute climb 1 mile north of Al Muharraq, ascending from 751 feet above sea level to 33,926 feet above sea level, an increase of 33,175 feet in 15 minutes, covering a distance of 95 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started 47 miles northwest of OEBQ Abqaiq Airport Buqayq, lasting 14 minutes and covering 97 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another enroute climb 15 miles northwest of OEPC Pump Station 3 Airport Wasea, ascending from 33,977 feet above sea level to 37,987 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,010 feet in 5 minutes, covering a distance of 36 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise resumed 5 miles east of OERK King Khaled International Airport Riyadh, lasting 60 minutes and covering 397 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent 49 miles northeast of Al Jumum, descending from 37,866 feet above sea level to 2,131 feet above sea level, a decrease of 35,736 feet in 19 minutes, covering a distance of 75 nautical miles.
The enroute level cruise started again 9 miles east of OEJF King Faisal Naval Base Jeddah, lasting 5 minutes and covering 14 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its final descent 3 miles northeast of Jeddah, descending from 1,978 feet above sea level to 1,238 feet above sea level, a decrease of 740 feet in 2 minutes, covering a distance of 5 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 34R at OEJN King Abdulaziz International Airport was made from the south, heading 340.0 degrees at 4 nautical miles and 1,199 feet above ground level. The landing was made on runway 34R, which had a length of 13,167 feet. The threshold height was well above the target, and the threshold speed was also well above the target at 155 knots.
The touchdown point was 1,688 feet beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 151 knots, which was considered good. However, the touchdown rate was hard at -420 feet per minute. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 45 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 73 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 350 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 0 knots and a headwind of 2 knots.
The total landing distance was 8,332 feet, which accounted for 63% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was misaligned by 60 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 13 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile.
The total flight distance was 732 nautical miles, taking a total of 145 minutes, and the aircraft used 41,607 pounds of fuel.
The Boeing 777F aircraft successfully landed at OEJN King Abdulaziz International Airport on runway 34R, but the landing was not without some issues. The final approach was initiated from the south, heading 340.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,199 feet above ground level (agl). The aircraft touched down on the runway, but the touchdown point was 1,688 feet beyond the designated touchdown zone, indicating a slight deviation from the intended landing spot.
The touchdown speed of 151 knots was within the acceptable range, but the touchdown rate was hard at -420 feet per minute (fpm), which may have caused some discomfort for the passengers. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 45 feet from the centreline, which could have been due to a slight deviation in the aircraft's alignment during the final approach.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 73°F and a gentle wind of 2 knots at 350°. The crosswind was negligible, and the headwind was 2 knots, which may have contributed to the hard touchdown rate. The total landing distance of 8,332 feet was 63% of the runway length, indicating that the aircraft had sufficient runway remaining for a safe stop.
However, the runway rollout alignment was also misaligned by 60 feet from the centreline, which could have been due to a combination of factors, including the aircraft's alignment during the final approach and the braking performance of the aircraft. Overall, while the landing was successful, there were some issues that need to be addressed to improve the aircraft's performance and safety.
