Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 3,105 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 415 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
Departing from Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, the Airbus A321 began its journey by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a process that took approximately 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. Upon reaching runway 33, the aircraft initiated its departure roll, utilizing 1,041 meters, or 32% of the runway, to achieve liftoff at a speed of 148 knots. The local weather conditions at the time of departure featured a temperature of 11°C, with a wind speed of 18 knots from a direction of 310°, resulting in a 7-knot crosswind and a 16-knot headwind.
As the aircraft climbed to its enroute altitude, it began its ascent 1 mile southwest of Langenhorn, Germany, and continued to rise to 36,783 feet above sea level, an increase of 35,701 feet, over a distance of 167 nautical miles, within a 24-minute period. Following this climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which lasted 40 minutes and covered 307 nautical miles, starting 1 mile south of EDBO Oehna Airfield in Brandenburg, Germany. The descent phase commenced 3 miles north of Zakopane, Poland, and saw the aircraft decrease its altitude from 37,032 feet to 2,114 feet above sea level, a drop of 34,918 feet, over a distance of 82 nautical miles, within a 16-minute period.
Upon reaching its destination, Košice International Airport, the aircraft initiated its final approach to runway 01 from the south, heading 13.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,356 feet above ground level. The landing was executed with a threshold speed slightly above the target at 142 knots, and a touchdown distance of 417 meters, which was within acceptable limits. However, the touchdown speed of 136 knots was a little fast, and the touchdown rate of -256 feet per minute was fair. The aircraft's runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centerline. Following the landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking area, a process that took approximately 1 minute and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 562 nautical miles, and the aircraft utilized 4,316 kilograms of fuel over the course of the 87-minute flight.
The aircraft, an Airbus A321, commenced its final approach to runway 01 at LZKZ Košice International Airport from the south, aligning with a heading of 13.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,356 feet above ground level. The approach quality was satisfactory, with a good threshold height achieved. However, the threshold speed was slightly above the target at 142 knots, indicating a slight deviation from the optimal landing configuration.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft exhibited a touchdown distance of 417 meters, which was within acceptable limits. The touchdown speed of 136 knots was a little fast, suggesting that the pilot may have been unable to fully arrest the descent before touching down. The touchdown rate of -256 feet per minute was fair, indicating a moderate rate of deceleration. The runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.0 meters from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the approach path or a minor error in the pilot's control inputs.
The aircraft's rollout was characterized by very good alignment with the centreline, demonstrating a high degree of control and precision. The total landing distance of 1,281 meters, which accounted for 41% of the runway length, was within acceptable limits. The local weather conditions, with a temperature of 7°C and a wind speed of 19 knots from 360°, contributed to a relatively straightforward landing. Overall, the landing was scored 99.3%, reflecting a high level of proficiency and control demonstrated by the pilot.
