Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 2,130 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 73 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The aircraft, a C750, began its journey from the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) at KASE by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, which took 9 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The departure roll on runway 33 commenced, and the plane lifted off the ground at a speed of 133 knots, taking 981 meters to reach liftoff, which equated to 46% of the runway.
As the aircraft climbed into the local skies, it encountered a temperature of 10°C, with winds blowing at 9 knots at 210 degrees. Due to these conditions, the crosswind was 7 knots, and the tailwind was a gentle 6 knots. The climb started approximately 1 mile south of Woody Creek, Colorado. Within 17 minutes, the plane ascended from 8,595 feet above sea level to 43,917 feet, an impressive increase of 35,322 feet. The enroute climb covered a distance of 101 nautical miles.
Following the climb, the aircraft engaged in a long enroute level cruise. This period commenced 8 miles southeast of the UT42 Westwater Airport Cisco in Utah and lasted for 53 minutes, covering an impressive 397 nautical miles. The plane cruised at a steady altitude before the next phase of the flight, which involved a descent.
The enroute descent started 20 miles southwest of the NV83 Hadley Airport Round Mountain in Nevada. Within 13 minutes, the plane descended from 43,972 feet above sea level to 16,441 feet, a decrease of 27,531 feet. This phase of the flight covered 87 nautical miles. The next enroute descent was initiated 3 miles north of O43 Yerington Mun Airport in Nevada. During this 2-minute descent, the plane dropped 3,986 feet in altitude, covering 9 nautical miles.
Following the initial descent from the enroute level cruise, the plane leveled off for a short period, flying 9 miles northwest of Stagecoach. This enroute level cruise lasted for 8 minutes, covering 36 nautical miles. Another descent started 2 miles southeast of O79 Sierraville Dearwater Sierraville Airport in California. The plane descended 4,993 feet in altitude over 5 minutes, covering 14 nautical miles. This was the final major enroute phase before the final approach.
The final approach to runway 11 at the KTRK Truckee Tahoe Airport began from the northwest, heading 120.0° at 323 feet above ground level. The aircraft touched down on the runway at 117 knots, which was slightly above the recommended threshold speed of 118 knots. However, the touchdown distance of 75 meters was within the acceptable range.
Upon landing, the total distance covered was 1,216 meters, which was 57% of the runway. Despite a slight misalignment of 3.2 meters from the centerline, the runway rollout alignment was very good. The total flight duration was 109 minutes, and the aircraft burned 1,561 kilograms of fuel. In the final stages of the journey, the aircraft taxiied to the parking area from the runway, taking 1 minute to cover less than 1 nautical mile.
Aircraft C750 successfully executed a landing on runway 11 at KTRK Truckee Tahoe Airport. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, a deviation of just 1 nautical mile (nm) and 323 feet above ground level (agl), with a heading of 120.0°, positioning itself perfectly for the next phase of the landing.
Upon touching down on the runway, aircraft C750 demonstrated a satisfactory threshold speed of 118 knots, indicating a good control and stability of the aircraft upon contact with the runway. Nonetheless, the estimated touchdown speed of 117 knots was slightly above the optimal speed recommended for this specific runway. Despite this, the touchdown distance of 75 meters did not exceed expectations.
However, the aircraft's touchdown rate proved to be quite aggressive at -533 feet per minute, suggesting that pilots may have been attempting to control the aircraft's descent and speed. Nevertheless, the slight misalignment of the runway touchdown position by 3.2 meters from the centerline indicates a small deviation, which was not severe enough to affect the overall performance.
The local weather conditions during the landing, with a temperature of 4°C, may have had an effect on the aircraft's performance. Nevertheless, the runway rollout alignment was deemed to be very good by the evaluators, suggesting that the aircraft maintained a stable course once it began to decelerate.
The total landing distance of 1,216 meters accounted for just 57% of the available runway length, indicating a successful deployment of the aircraft's braking system and a controlled roll-out after touchdown. In conclusion, while there were some minor imperfections in the landing performance of aircraft C750, the execution overall was satisfactory and demonstrates a good level of proficiency in landing operations.
