Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 5,000 ft of the approach.
Plan view — the first 5,000 ft of the 8,192 ft runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 1,153 ft touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Cessna CJ4 Citation, then departed from runway 18L at KTUL Tulsa International Airport. The takeoff distance was 2,116 feet, which accounted for 21% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 151 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 60°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind was 2 knots, while the headwind was 0 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south of KTUL Tulsa International Airport. The climb took 11 minutes and covered 51 nautical miles, during which the aircraft ascended from 1,622 feet above sea level to 30,005 feet above sea level, an increase of 28,382 feet.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 3 miles east of OK95 Disney Airport. This phase lasted for 79 minutes and covered 586 nautical miles. The aircraft then began its enroute descent, starting 1 mile north of Marysville, Ohio. The descent took 16 minutes and covered 86 nautical miles, during which the aircraft descended from 29,872 feet above sea level to 2,990 feet above sea level, a decrease of 26,881 feet.
The aircraft then entered another level cruise phase, which started 1 mile south of North Lawrence, Ohio. This phase lasted for 2 minutes and covered 6 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 05 at KCAK Akron Canton Regional Airport was made from the southwest, with a heading of 47.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,279 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 05 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 1,150 feet. The touchdown speed was 92 knots, which was slightly above the target speed. The touchdown rate was excellent at -99 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°, with a crosswind of 1 knot and a tailwind of 1 knot.
The total landing distance was 2,713 feet, which accounted for 33% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 2 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 735 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 115 minutes. Notably, the aircraft used 0 pounds of fuel during the flight.
The Cessna CJ4 Citation successfully landed at KCAK Akron Canton Regional Airport, achieving a score of 96.1%. The aircraft approached the runway from the southwest, heading 47.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,279 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot executed a precise final approach, taking into account the runway's length of 8,192 feet and its orientation.
Upon touchdown, the aircraft's threshold height was satisfactory, and the threshold speed was well above the target at 103 knots. However, the touchdown speed of 92 knots was slightly faster than desired. The touchdown rate of -99 feet per minute (fpm) was excellent, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The aircraft's touchdown distance of 1,150 feet was also within acceptable limits.
Despite the successful landing, there were some minor issues to note. The runway touchdown position was misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline, which may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's alignment during the approach. Additionally, the runway rollout alignment was also slightly misaligned by 29 feet from the centreline, although this may have been a result of the initial touchdown position.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were favorable, with a temperature of 59°F and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind and tailwind components were minimal, at 1 knot each, which likely contributed to the smooth landing. Overall, the pilot's performance was commendable, and the aircraft's systems functioned as expected.
