Work on the flare
See Arrival Landing
Arrive slow and the sink rate at the threshold is already above schedule, the flare is short because there is no energy to extend it, and the touchdown is hard in a way that feels exactly like a late flare. Diagnosing a slow arrival as a late flare is the catastrophic misread: you respond by flaring earlier, which bleeds more speed, which makes the next one worse. The tiebreaker is threshold speed against VRef, not feel. Never diagnose a flare without it.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
Two stabilised approach gates, each with seven checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,666 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,666 m of the 3,216 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
Touched down 539 m past the threshold — beyond the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began by taxiing from the parking area to the runway, a distance of less than 1 nautical mile, which took 5 minutes. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A321, and it was departing from Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport (EDSB) on runway 21. The takeoff distance covered 46% of the runway length, which was 1,136 meters. The liftoff speed reached 146 knots as the aircraft lifted off the ground.
The local weather conditions at the time of takeoff were relatively calm, with a temperature of 12°C and light winds of 3 knots from a direction of 96°, which resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a tailwind of 1 knot. After takeoff, the climb began about 1 mile southwest of EDSB, where the aircraft lifted off from an altitude of 1,422 feet above sea level (asl) to reach an enroute climb altitude of 38,571 ft asl, an increase of 37,149 ft in 28 minutes, while covering 143 nautical miles.
During this climb, the aircraft transitioned into an enroute level cruise, which started about 4 miles southwest of Rotenburg an der Fulda in the state of Hessen, Germany, and lasted for 7 minutes, covering 57 nautical miles. The enroute climb and cruise phases were followed by the commencement of the enroute descent from an altitude of 38,703 ft asl to 1,350 ft asl, decreasing by 37,353 ft in 22 minutes, while covering 109 nautical miles. This descent phase began approximately 1 mile northeast of Eimen in the state of Lower Saxony, Germany.
The final approach to runway 15 at Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport (EDDH) was performed from the northwest, heading towards a bearing of 153.0° at an altitude of 4 nautical miles and 1,297 feet above ground level. The landing took place on runway 15, which was 3,216 meters long. The threshold height above ground level was 67 feet, which was above the target, and the threshold speed was well above target at 143 knots.
The touchdown point occurred 125 meters beyond the touchdown zone, with a touchdown speed of 132 knots, which was slightly fast. The touchdown rate was firm at -331 feet per minute. Notably, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.2 meters from the centerline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were similar to those at takeoff, with a temperature of 12°C and light winds of 10 knots from a direction of 70°, resulting in a crosswind of 10 knots and a headwind of 1 knot.
Upon landing, the total landing distance covered 49% of the runway length at 1,587 meters, and the runway rollout alignment was excellent. The taxiing from the runway to the parking area took 3 minutes, covering less than 1 nautical mile. The overall distance of the flight was 316 nautical miles, which took about 66 minutes to complete, and it used 3,553 kilograms of fuel throughout the journey.
The Airbus A321 successfully executed a landing at EDDH Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, with a score of 90.5%. The aircraft began its final approach to runway 15 from the northwest, headed at 153.0°. Its proximity to the runway was 4 nautical miles (nm) and an altitude of 1,297 feet above ground level (agl).
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 15, which has a length of 3,216 meters. However, the threshold height was found above the target at 67 feet agl, indicating a slightly raised aircraft compared to the recommended level. The threshold speed was also significantly above the target at 143 knots, suggesting a higher approach speed than required.
Despite some inconsistencies at the beginning of the landing, the aircraft's touchdown speed of 132 knots, while a little fast, resulted in a firm touchdown rate of -331 feet per minute (fpm). This touchdown point occurred 125 meters beyond the designated touchdown zone. Additionally, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 5.2 meters from the centerline.
The landing was made under local weather conditions with a temperature of 12°C and a moderate wind of 10 kt at a direction of 70°. The crosswind was also 10 kt in the opposite direction, while a minimal headwind of 1 kt was present. The overall impact on the landing's outcome was notable, as it resulted in a total landing distance of 1,587 meters, representing 49% of the total runway length.
Fortunately, despite a few deviations, the plane's runway rollout alignment was found to be very good, ensuring a smooth post-landing phase. With such a close assessment, a score of 90.5% signifies that this landing was relatively successful and demonstrates the aircraft's overall capabilities in terms of performance, even when dealing with varying environmental conditions.
