Shorten the long landing
Ground effect becomes significant below about one wingspan of height. A Cessna 172, with a 36 ft span, enters ground effect at flare height - the float it feels in the hold-off is ground effect arriving on cue. An A320, with a span around 117 ft, has been in ground effect since before the threshold and there is no sudden cushion to feel, only a gradual reduction in induced drag that lengthens any float you allow.

Two stabilised approach gates, each with five checks, where the approach path is 1,000 ft and 500 ft above the runway.
At the 1,000 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
At the 500 ft gate: sink rate above what the glideslope needed.
The approach, gate by gate
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,651 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 326 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 6 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, then departed from runway 09 at EGGD Bristol Airport. The takeoff distance was 956 meters, which accounted for 51% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 143 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 5°C, with a wind speed of 15 knots at 99°. This resulted in a crosswind of 4 knots and a headwind of 15 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting overhead EGGD Bristol Airport and rising from 1,609 feet above sea level to 5,878 feet above sea level, an increase of 4,269 feet in just 3 minutes, covering a distance of 9 nautical miles.
Following the initial climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise, starting 1 mile south east of Mangotsfield, and lasted for 2 minutes, covering 7 nautical miles. The aircraft then began another climb, this time from 7,407 feet above sea level to 32,983 feet above sea level, an increase of 25,576 feet in 16 minutes, covering a distance of 105 nautical miles. The aircraft then entered another level cruise, starting 18 miles south of Seaford, and lasted for 27 minutes, covering 228 nautical miles.
As the aircraft approached its destination, it began its descent, starting 2 miles north east of Chateauneuf-Val-de-Bargis, and descended from 32,984 feet above sea level to 2,702 feet above sea level, a decrease of 30,282 feet in 33 minutes, covering a distance of 144 nautical miles. The final approach to runway 18 at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport was made from the north, heading 177.0° at 4 nautical miles and 1,911 feet above ground level.
The landing on runway 18 was successful, with a touchdown distance of 328 meters, which was good. The touchdown speed was 130 knots, and the touchdown rate was fair at -281 feet per minute. However, the runway touchdown position was slightly misaligned by 4.6 meters from the centreline. The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 6°C, with a wind speed of 2 knots at 270°, resulting in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 0 knots.
The total landing distance was 1,069 meters, which accounted for 65% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was very good. The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 3 minutes and covered less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 501 nautical miles, taking 92 minutes, and the aircraft used 3,731 kilograms of fuel.
The Boeing 737-800 aircraft successfully landed at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport, with a final approach score of 98.7%. The aircraft was approaching the runway from the north, heading 177.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,911 feet above ground level (agl). The pilot's control and navigation skills were evident in the precise approach, which set the stage for a smooth landing.
Upon landing, the aircraft touched down on runway 18 with a speed of 137 knots, which was within the acceptable threshold speed. The touchdown distance of 328 meters was also within the expected range, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing process. However, the touchdown speed of 130 knots was slightly lower than the threshold speed, which may have been a deliberate decision by the pilot to ensure a safe and controlled landing.
The touchdown rate of -281 feet per minute (fpm) was fair, suggesting that the pilot may have been able to improve the rate of descent to achieve a more optimal landing. Nevertheless, the overall performance was satisfactory, and the aircraft came to rest on the runway with a total landing distance of 1,069 meters, which was 65% of the runway length. This indicates that the pilot had sufficient control and braking power to bring the aircraft to a stop within a reasonable distance.
One area for improvement was the runway touchdown position, which was slightly misaligned by 4.6 meters from the centerline. This may have been due to a slight deviation in the pilot's control or navigation during the final approach. However, the runway rollout alignment was very good, indicating that the pilot had maintained control and precision throughout the landing process.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were favorable, with a temperature of 6°C and a wind speed of 2 knots from 270°. The crosswind component was minimal, and the headwind was negligible, which made the landing process even smoother. Overall, the pilot's performance was commendable, and the aircraft landed safely and efficiently at LFLB Chambéry Savoie Mont Blanc Airport.
