Avoid steep turns at low altitude
Below a thousand feet the aeroplane is slow, heavy and close to the ground. A steep turn loses lift, raises the stall speed and flattens the climb just when the gradient matters most. A normal turn on course is a rate one — fifteen degrees or so, twenty-five at the outside, this penalty is to acknowledge when a turn has stopped being a turn and become a manoeuvre.

The threshold, the flare and the hold-off. The approach that led to it is the stabilisation gates below.
One stabilised approach gate: five checks where the approach path is 500 ft above the runway. The 1,000 ft gate was not assessed, because the approach did not join final that far out.
Side view — the last 1,524 m of the approach.
Plan view — the first 1,524 m of the 1,771 m runway, to the same scale as the side view.
The 477 m touchdown sits inside the full-score zone. The arrival was smooth.
The rest of the report
The flight began with a taxiing period from the parking to the runway, which took 7 minutes and covered a distance of 1 nautical mile. The aircraft, a Citation CJ3+, then departed from runway 16 at KRDD Redding Municipal Airport, with a takeoff distance of 725 meters, which accounted for 34% of the runway. The liftoff speed was 127 knots.
The local weather conditions at the time of departure were characterized by a temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 6 knots from a direction of 200 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 2 knots and a headwind of 5 knots. The aircraft then began its enroute climb, starting 1 mile south of KRDD Redding Municipal Airport, and climbed from an altitude of 1,350 feet above sea level to 39,662 feet above sea level, an increase of 38,311 feet, in 21 minutes and covering a distance of 92 nautical miles.
Following the enroute climb, the aircraft entered a level cruise phase, which started 5 miles north of CA09 Round Mountain Ranch Airport and lasted for 11 minutes, covering a distance of 82 nautical miles. The enroute descent then began 3 miles north of Glide, Oregon, and the aircraft descended from an altitude of 38,887 feet above sea level to 1,491 feet above sea level, a decrease of 37,396 feet, in 25 minutes and covering a distance of 98 nautical miles.
The final approach to runway 13 at KSLE Salem-Willamette Valley Airport/McNary Field was made from the northwest, with a heading of 150.0 degrees, at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,284 feet above ground level. The landing was successful, with a touchdown speed of 105 knots and a touchdown rate of -177 feet per minute. The touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the touchdown zone, and the runway touchdown alignment was perfect.
The local weather conditions at the time of landing were characterized by a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with a wind speed of 4 knots from a direction of 189 degrees. This resulted in a crosswind of 3 knots and a headwind of 3 knots. The total landing distance was 1,196 meters, which accounted for 68% of the runway. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect.
The taxiing period from the runway to the parking took 5 minutes and covered a distance of less than 1 nautical mile. The total flight distance was 279 nautical miles, and the flight duration was 70 minutes. The aircraft used a total of 496 kilograms of fuel during the flight.
The Citation CJ3+ aircraft, registered as N60US, successfully landed at the Salem-Willamette Valley Airport/McNary Field (KSLE) with an impressive score of 99.8%. The aircraft approached the runway from the northwest, heading 150.0° at a distance of 4 nautical miles and an altitude of 1,284 feet above ground level (agl).
The landing was executed on runway 13, which has a length of 1,771 meters. The threshold height was reported as good, indicating that the aircraft was at the correct height as it approached the runway. However, the threshold speed was slightly below the target speed of 114 knots, which may have been due to the aircraft's descent rate or the pilot's decision to slow down before touchdown.
The touchdown point was 49 meters beyond the touchdown zone, which is a relatively short distance. The touchdown speed of 105 knots was within the acceptable range, and the touchdown rate of -177 feet per minute (fpm) was also good, indicating a smooth and controlled descent. The runway touchdown alignment was perfect, which is a testament to the pilot's skill and attention to detail.
The local weather conditions at the time of the landing were mild, with a temperature of 10°C and a light wind of 4 knots from 189°. The crosswind component was minimal at 3 knots, and the headwind component was also 3 knots, which helped to stabilize the aircraft during the approach and landing.
The total landing distance of 1,196 meters was 68% of the runway length, which is a relatively short distance considering the aircraft's size and weight. The runway rollout alignment was also perfect, indicating that the pilot maintained control of the aircraft during the rollout phase.
Overall, the landing of the Citation CJ3+ aircraft, N60US, was a textbook example of a well-executed approach and landing. The pilot's skills and attention to detail were evident throughout the procedure, and the aircraft's performance was impressive.
